The purpose of lap shoulder on onesies and gowns

I just learned the reason for the lap shoulder is so that you can pull it down their body instead of over the head, which is particularly useful if there is a blowout diaper. Is this true?

    Yes. And it's very useful. Up the back blow outs were frequent with DD and I liked being able to fold them down without getting any on her head.

    I always thought it was just there to get it over their heads easily and being able to pull it down over their body to get it off was a happy coincidence. I don't really know though.
