question for babywearing mamas

I've asked this on my local babywearing FB group, but frankly I trust you ladies more. ;)

JJ is 3.5 weeks old now and I've worn her in the Moby and the mei tai a few times. The past week or so, though, she's been less and less willing to put her legs in the froggy/folded leg position. Around what age did y'all start carrying with legs out? I'm just worried she's not quite big enough for it yet. She still seems so tiny!

ETA: Should have mentioned I'm using a Moby and a mei tai right now.

  • We use an Ergo and we didn't do legs out till four months. (Some might say that was even too early???)

  • Hmmm... I didn't realize it would be too early for legs out. My LO isn't a fan of the frog leg position anymore. She stopped liking it around week 2 in my Balboa Baby sling. I let her feet dangle in my Boba wrap. I think it's called the Love Your Baby Hold if I remember correctly.
  • I'm sticking with the newborn position for at least a month. My dad's an orthopedist and he warned us about how having her legs out straight in a carrier or swaddled too early can interfere with normal hip development, so we're trying to be really careful. I find that often she doesn't like it until I get her just right and then she'll relax and go with it.

  • Um...honestly I didn't know it was abnormal to do legs out :P

Cam won't even let me swaddle his legs though. He likes to stick them straight out and his favorite thing to do right now is "stand" (with me or DH holding him and supporting his neck, although he has held his head up himself since day one).
