Well, I went up to 42 weeks and was still pregnant with no signs of labor. My cervix was still high, 1cm and not particularly favorable for induction but at 42 weeks it was time.
I checked into L&D at midnight and began cytotec. Several hours later I started pitocin. I was apparently supposed to sleep but that was impossible for me. So I began this whole thing exhausted. After many hours of pitocin and the cytotec I was having regular contractions which were mostly back labor- the doctor found out that the baby was sunny side up. Once contractions really got going I vomited everything up- granted all I'd had was liquids. I was able to manage the contractions using the different techniques I'd learned and with the help of my doula and husband.
We tried a bunch of things to get him to turn over but nothing was working. His heart rate suddenly tanked and the nurse was having me flip from left to right to knees and rubbing my belly trying to get his heart rate up. I was put on oxygen. Doctors and nurses ran in and it all scared the bejesus out of me. They stopped the pitocin. We got his heart rate stable but at this point I was sobbing- terrified something would happen to him.
They had to turn the pit back on but wanted me to stay laying on my side through the contractions. With the back labor, being stuck in bed on oxygen, and the fact I was only 5cm I opted for the epidural at this point. I got it pretty quickly and we tried to do some side laying positions to help him turn. It hadn't even fully kicked in before the doctors were back in because his heart rate was decreasing after each contraction.
They were going to monitor it for 30 minutes but it kept getting worse so within 10 minutes or so the doctor said she did not feel comfortable continuing. He wouldn't tolerate the pitocin and I couldn't progress without it. So, it was csection time.
I was extremely upset and felt like a failure but I just wanted him safe. The section was interesting. The drugs made me very sick so I was vomiting while on the operating table. My arms were shaking so uncontrollably I felt bad for DH because he had to see me flopping about with tears streaming down my face. If the roles were reversed I'd have been freaking out but he held it together.
Pretty soon, my son arrived! He was apparently really wedged in there and likely wouldve been csectioned eventually. They had to get lots of fluid out of him but he cried and got 9/9 on his apgars. He was just over 8lbs. It was awesome! Ultimately this was not the experience I expected, but I got a healthy baby at the end which is all I really wanted.
The nurses at the hospital were wonderful. Truly wonderful. Now we home and figuring this all out together.
