Opinion on the name Jonah

I know I don't ever post, but I lurk this board and some of the BMB's a lot and would really love some opinions.. my husband and I are expecting our first baby in April (a boy). 

We don't agree on many names so far, but one of them that we both like is Jonah.  When people ask us lately, I've mentioned the name possibility to a few of them, and I've had 2-3 guys think it was a girls name?? I have never thought of it being a feminine name, but now I'm questioning it.  Would you have ever thought "girl" when you heard the name Jonah or have you heard of people thinking it was a female name?

I would never think of Jonah as a girls name. It is all boy.

Thanks! I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy... because I was REALLY surprised when I got that response.. especially from more than 1 person!

Whoa. I would never think Jonah was a girl. There is nothing feminine about it at all. I prefer the similar Jonas, but Jonah is a good name.

Jonah is clearly a masculine name, and I'm very surprised more than one person would think otherwise.  Maybe they thought you were saying Joan?

I just named our current baby Jonah. I would never think girl, it's all boy and I love this name.

Thanks everyone! I really like the name, and I can't say that about any other boy names at this point. The first person to question it was my grandpa, but then I reminded him about Jonah and the whale from the Bible.  I didn't think too much about it since he's pretty old, but then I was at a party last night, and another guy said the same thing so I was surprised.  It's going to stay the top-runner for now

Never would have thought girl, only thought of boy when I hear Jonah. My friend just named her son Jonah. Beautiful name.

We are naming our son Jonah. Anyone who thinks it is a girl name is nuts. There are lots of unisex names out there (especially right now) but Jonah definitely isn't one of them

I think maybe for someone who knows very little about names, the -a/ah ending could be equated with feminine names. But those people would be very much in the minority. It's definitely masculine to me.

Jonah is not at all a girl name. I think your friends need to get out more.
