Baby standing in crib

So, we had finally reached the end of sleep training (The Sleep Lady) and it was going wonderfully!

However, on the last day of "the shuffle" DS learned to stand up in his crib. Unfortunately, he hasn't learned how to get down yet so he just gets stuck up there. Because of that, just ignoring him until he gets down himself isn't an option.

When I put him back down, he immediately gets back up. I either have to sit next to him and forcefully (but gently) hold him down or have him repeatedly stand up (crying either way).

HELP! Did anything work for you?

Re: Baby standing in crib

  • We worked on sitting during the day. We would put him in the crib and tell him "sit on your bum" and help him get back down. I'd also stand him at our coffee table and sit down hold his one hand and do the same thing. He figured it out pretty quick and would do it on his own at night. Good luck! It's so sad seeing them standing there arms dangled over confused how to get back down

  • Thanks for the stories so far! We'll definitely keep practicing during the day.

I briefly tried leaving, setting him down without engaging, repeat but gave up after a few tries. Maybe I should keep it up for longer.

  • DD learned how to stand up in her crib 2 weeks after we finished the Sleep Lady's Shuffle.  It only took a couple of days for her to learn how to get back down on her own.  She also learned how to crawl and got 4 teeth at this time.  I spend extra time patting her in her crib during this rough time.  I then did a modified version of the shuffle over 3 days.

We practice squatting during the day.  When she is standing and holding onto our ottoman, I hold a toy a little low for her.  She has to squat down if she wants to get it.  I don't know if this will help your LO learn to sit down, but my dd's physical therapist said it helps her walk.
  • Thanks @holly142‌ That's really helpful! Here's hoping for a good Saturday night! At least he's able to put himself back to sleep overnight. It's just the initial bedtime that's rough.

  • I too practiced guiding him down on his but during the day. When he first pulled up to stand he thought you went head first into everything.
  • Thank you everyone! Tonight went much better! I left the room every time he stood up and when he started crying, went in and laid him down. Repeat until he stayed laying down and fell asleep.

Much fewer tears than last night!

  • Glad things improved for you guys. I found that whenever DD learned a new skill she would do it as soon she even stirred in her sleep it seemed. Which would mean she would wake up completely and cry. So as soon as she could sit up in her own or stand on her own we had multiple wake ups. For us it only lasted a few nights to a week at most. Hopefully LOs sleep will go back to normal for you soon.
