Pregnant after IF

Looking for info about what you took for a UTI

What a day. Started out with a random spot on the toilet paper :( and a day of obsessive worrying before the thought to check for a UTI with an at-home kit came into my mind.  (Of course my OB's office was closed for the holiday.) Sure enough that stupid strip turned purple for positive and now I'm waiting for the doctor on call to call me back. :(  My after-hours office said they will treat pregnant women, but that they are very busy with only one doctor.  Plus I am terrified of catching something there.

I do not trust general doctors and am super upset not to be able to see my OB right now, but I really don't think I should wait on this until Monday.  That said, can anyone throw out names of anything they've taken for a UTI before?  If I end up having to see a non-OB doc, I want to be able to think on my feet about questions pertaining to medications.  Paranoid I know, but this has me super stressed out. :(

I am currently on Macrobid for my UTI. That is the only one I know about that is safe during pregnancy since I've been on it a few times so far during this pregnancy! I hope you get it taken care of soon! UTIs suck!

  • It's really important to have a UTI treated properly during pregnancy. If it's left untreated, it could lead to preterm labor or miscarriage. Please see a doctor, any doctor.

I've had to take antibiotics twice for a suspected UTI. Most doctors will prescribe macrobid/nitrofurantoin. It is safe to use during pregnancy (category B) until the last 2-4 weeks (it could lead to anemia). I can't imagine that any doctor, OB or not, won't know this. You can also double-check when you get to the pharmacy. That's what I did - before I paid for it, I spoke to the pharmacist and they confirmed that the pill I was given was the pregnancy - safe antibiotic.

Probiotics, cranberry juice and any OTC options will not help you if you already have an infection. They may help ease your symptoms, but you need an antibiotic to treat the infection. If you can't see a doctor and they won't call in a prescription, you can go to the ER. I don't think any clinics or urgent care centers will treat pregnant women.

I just went to an urgent care this morning and they treated me. It wasn't for a UTI, but it wasn't a problem being pregnant. Don't know if it's different with pregnancy related issues. The DR that saw me knew exactly what meds she could and could not prescribe me because of the pregnancy.

Yeah it might be just UTIs. I'm not sure and I don't really know why they won't do anything. I just know that when I needed to see someone on the weekend, no one would treat me. I tried at least three different places. It was so frustrating.

  • I know this is an older thread, but I wanted to share anyway. I have a bad history of UTIs, so as soon as I found out I was pregnant, I made sure to ask what I could take. Like the previous posters mentioned, Macrobid and Nitrofuran (sp?) should be fine. Sulphate antibiotis (ie- Apo-Sulfatrim) are a definite no-no.

If you ever are unsure, your pharmacist is also a great source of information. And unlike doctors, they will usually take the time to answer your questions. I hope you are feeling better.
  • My doctor gave me amoxicillin 3 x a day for 10 days
