Lego duplo! I find they stay together better than a lot of he big blocks but they can also pull them apart! More pricey than off brands but worth it IMO
We have the Melissa and Doug wooden blocks and DD really likes them. They're pretty small and there's a ton of them, so I just try to put out a few at a time. Each side has a different letter/number/picture. DD loves naming off what's on them. We got them in a Citrus Lane box, but I think they're fairly reasonable.
I laugh a little because Duplos are the smartest answer right now but my real answer is toilet paper rolls and play-dough containers!
Lately DD has LOVED taking the toilet paper rolls out of the basket and piling them up high. They are large and stack well so they don't frustrate her like some of our smaller blocks. Also the smaller play-dough containers sit on one another and she has done that a great deal too. Weird kid.
