Awake Time

How long do you think your LO's are awake each day? I feel like we get very little awake time that is happy time. LO is 6 weeks tomorrow. Today went like this (sorry that it's one huge paragraph, dumb ipad)... 8-9 woke, bottle, got packed up for 6-week check up 9-10:30- slept for 15 minute car ride then on and off for dr appt and ride home 10:30-11-awake, I think...can't remember 11-12-bottle then off and on sleep 12- 3-friend. Arrives to help so I can get stuff done. LO sleeps on friend til we get her up for bottle and changing at 3. 3-4:30- bottle and she's clearly tired so friend takes her back to her room and she sleep 4:30:5:45- my sister and niece/nephews arrive and baby wakes up bc I drag her downstairs to visit. She's fussy the whole time. 6- They lv and I get LO back to sleep and set her down 7- I wake her to change and feed. She's now been asleep since By my tally, this isn't much awake time and it's pretty typical. I know I'm blessed she's sleeping and will probably be fine at night, too, but is thus normal? I don't think my other two slept this much. What are your LO's doing?

Re: Awake Time

  • My LO is 10 weeks tomorrow and he still slept a large portion of the day up until a week ago. However, now that he has started STTN his awake time during the day has increased dramatically. I wouldn't worry about it too much, especially if your LO is sleeping well for you at night.

  • That makes me feel better. I'm sure my other two probably would have slept as much, but I'm thinking I didn't pick up on their tired cues as well as I do now.

DS has one or two stretches a day where he's awake for about an hour after eating and a diaper change. The rest of the time he's obviously tired so I do my best to get him back to sleep.

    ETA He's 6 weeks old.
  • At 8 weeks lo is awake almost all afternoon since he sleeps almost all night. It makes for a really long day.

My 6 week old is awake a LOT.  He catnaps during the morning after he "gets up" around 9a, will get a 2-3 stretch of sleep around 3pm, eat and catnap until 10p, then his witching hiur starts and he's crazy fussy until 12:30a.

This is us too. We're 7 weeks tomorrow. BTW me pedi said today that 6-7 weeks for some reason is the fussiest times for babies.
  • Lately, DD hasnt slept at all during the day and is up every few hours at night. Today she only fell asleep for about 20 minutes twice. When DH got home she fell asleep on him for about an hour. I'm so tired...

  • My baby sleeps for most of the day....but there is a period in the afternoon/evening where she is awake for a solid 2 hours...she will be 1 month tomorrow...

My daughter if we're at home will just cat nap..but if we're out she tends to sleep more. Probably bc at home I try to put her down so she wakes up soon after. However some days even at home she sleeps more than shes awake.
So basically to answer your question there is a large window of what's normal sleeping habits for babies.

    This sounds exactly like DS.

  • Had I posted yesterday I would've said something different but last night LO was awake from 630pm until midnight. It was really calm and peaceful..... :-/

  • DD seems to change her sleep patterns every week...but recently she has been more of a cat napper. She usually has a good alert period for 2-3 hours when she wakes up for the morning around 7:30, then will sleep for an hour maybe and then for the rest of the day it is usually on and off sleeping and awake time. She is usually pretty alert and not fussy in the morning, but is pretty fussy the rest of the day. She doesn't spend hours crying or anything, but she just needs a lot of attention while awake to keep her happy. Usually putting her in the moby and walking around the house is her go to. Makes it super easy to get things done...
