Anyone else feel bad after drinking coffee/tea?

It makes my stomach kind of hurt/burn and wondering if this is common? Also, is tea okay to drink? Reading mix things and not sure about it. Either way I'm excited to join this community. I'm 28 and pregnant for the first time and am 13 wks 2 days and my due date is 5/30/15. Thanks for any replies in advance.

As far as an upset tummy, no, but I did in the first trimester. As far as harming the baby, no. Read the studies carefully. The rats/animals were feed the equlivant of 22 yes, 22 caffinated drinks a day. I'm sure 22 of anything a day is bound to cause some effects. My OBGYN was actually the one who told me to calm down and research it more :)

There are 2-3 teas to stear clear of but I forget their names off hand.

  • Welcome to the group! I still can't do coffee, but I noticed that lattes are easier for me, and a shot of espresso has less caffeine than a cup of coffee :) I've read different things about herbal teas, but I'll drink an assortment of black tea.

  • Coffee has been so far the only thing that gives me morning sickness- it's exactly like you describe with cramping/hurting then I feel like vomiting. I have switched to tea, which doesn't bother my stomach unless I try to drink more than one caffeinated cup per day. Right now I'm 15 weeks along, but I've had to be coffee free since I was probably about 7 weeks along. It was what prompted me to take a pregnancy test.

  • I love coffee and tea but couldn't stomach them during 1st trimester and also everything gave me heartburn. Now I'm back to loving them! There are a few teas I think you're supposed to avoid while pregnant but they're not very common ones. So unless you drink obscure teas then I wouldn't worry about it and when in doubt ask your OB!

  • It depends. Some days, it's heartburn city. Other days, I'm completely fine! If it bothers me, I just take some tums. :)
  • Tea gives me heartburn often. Even tea that I've drank before with no bad effects.
  • I didn't drink any coffee during first tri and wasn't planning on it until I heard from a pediatrician how introducing new things after birth (while BF) can upset baby's stomach. Not sure how true that is (I'm a FTM and haven't really researched that part of the subject...feel free to add if you know!) but I do know I will always need coffee!!! So now I drink a cup or two a week. All in moderation ladies!

  • I've been off coffee pretty much since I found out I was pregnant. I'd have no problem drinking it (I had an iced coffee habit pre-pregnancy) but it makes me nauseous so I can't :( I miss coffee.

  • I loved coffee pre-pregnancy. Now I Ick. Makes me sick thinking about it. I have had two lattes this whole pregnancy that went down ok.
  • I had issues with it during my first trimester. And coming from a usually 3-cup a day habit, I missed it hard, but my brain was just telling my body it was no good. Then when I hit my second trimester, my doc recommended me re-introducing it to help me with my headaches. It has helped a lot, but I can't drink all the varieties that I used to, and flavored coffee creamer helps!
  • Coffee has been giving me the jitters even if I have three sips. As for tea, be careful of Hibiscus in large quantities. I've found almost every tea has hibiscus in it. Just to be safe I am only having mint, hop and oregano tea.

  • I have 1 cup every morning, and it feels like a glorious privilege!
  • Being overly cautious as I am, I would switch to decaf.

  • Yes, I get that, too! Actually- and I have no idea why- it's worse with tea than coffee for me. Maybe bc I drink my coffee like, all milk and sugar with a splash of coffee? Anyways- yes, our stomachs are extra sensitive now. So try making it weaker or getting your caffeine from coke or someplace else for now. When I was about 14 weeks or so I was able to start drinkin coffee. I couldn't tolerate even a sip in the first tri.
  • I've always been a HUGE coffee drinker (all those years of working nights). While pregnant with DD all I could drink was iced coffee-nothing hot.

With this pregnancy, just the thought of coffee until about week 11-12 was enough to make me want to vomit. Now I'm back to being able to drink it-iced and hot. My OB said 2 small cups a day is fine

Pumpkin spice creamer has been my lifesaver.  I drink it with one or two regular cups a week and decaf pretty much every night...it has replaced my daily starbucks PSL :)

  • Today is the first day I've had coffee first thing in the morning like I used to everyday pre-pregnancy. It was a complete turnoff during first tri.

If you need coffee/tea maybe try it mid morning so it's not on an empty stomach.

  • Today was a sad day....my love affair with coffee seems to be dwindling.  I have not tested but have been feeling off lately.  Yesterday it took me an hour to get through my morning coffee.  Gave my diarrhea (TMI).  Last night at work had one got a few sips in and poured it out.  This morning made a cup and was very excited to drink it, got a few sips in and had to hit the bathroom again.  Also making me jittery, shaky, and dizzy.  Even my coworker asked me yesterday afternoon if i was okay because i was jittery and flushed and was talking like i had had 2 cups.  What's going on with me?
  • I drink coffee everyday; it feels like a warm hug!  I cut down to half of what I normally drink after finding out that I was pregnant (1.5 cups).  I do try to throw in lattes here and there because espresso has less caffeine.  I do get guilt trips from my non-preggo never-been-mom friends, and I tell them that I am allowed to have coffee.  And it's usually half-caff too, so lay off!  I think I would know better than they would about what to eat/drink while pregnant.
  • I cut coffee out when we decided to TTC, but it was bc I had like 4 cups/day plus other caffinated drinks (down to 0 now). Besides general health, my mom has this belief that a really low ph from acidic foods produces girls, and I'm hoping for a boy (AS scan 12.16.14!!!) My mom had all 3 girls and swears her acidic drinks/diet swayed the sexes. It's our families own wives tale, but we'll see!
  • I have 1-2 cups of Oregon Chai Tea daily; the website says it has 30 grams of caffeine each so 60 grams of my 100 grams allowance (I believe it is 100, right?) I am not worried.
  • Nope. I drink it and enjoy it. As long as you stay under 200mg a day, you are good.

I have found that if I do drink coffee or tea in the morning and don't eat enough I feel really light headed. So I still drink tea occasionally, but I can't do coffee at all anymore, it makes me feel bad.

  • Hold the heck on!! You mean to tell me I CAN have my coffee?? My Dr told me no caffeine!! WTH? lol
  • Green tea can affect folic acid absorption so I stopped drinking that. Regular coffee makes me sick, but that new Chesnut Praline Latte at Starbucks is amazing. I usually get half caff. I also love iced tea now. Last time I tried to drink black tea hot it made me jittery so I'm sticking to iced unless I'm desperate. I don't drink it at the office bc one of my coworkers who is an all natural mom freaks out on me about having caffeine.
  • Weird, I know, but I would feel sick from drinking dunkin donuts iced coffee (I would drink them everyday before pregnancy) but totally was fine drinking the ones from McDonald's! Under 200mg of caffeine a day, I think you'll be fine.
  • Thank you everyone for the responses...I'm still getting used to this app on my phone and didn't realize I had gotten so many responses! Makes a girl feel loved :). I'm 15 weeks now and for some reason iced coffee I have no problem with, just hot. Seems weird but I'm just gonna go with it and listen to whatever my body seems ok with. Thanks again for all the responses!!
