Teeth whitening?

Can you whiten when you're pregnant?  I broke a filling a couple weeks ago and had to go last week to get it fixed. My dentist said she doesn't work on patients in the first trimester.. she was able to drill and clean it out and put a patch in there and said she wanted to wait until I had the baby to truly repair it.  I have a whitening kit at home that I've been wanting to try but that made me nervous because I couldn't think of anything she would have done that would have caused any problems? So I wasn't sure if whitening is ok too?

I don't know. hmmmm? When I was last pregnant my Dentist would only clean and not do anything else the entire pregnancy. I haven't been yet since becoming pregnant. Was just going to wait until after baby since I was so sick in the early part.

I don't think whitening would hurt your fetus - at least I haven't read anything to that effect. But a quick call to your dentist's office would give you an answer. Or you could call the 1-800 number on your whitening kit and ask them if they are comfortable with you using their product while pregnant. But my first thought was that pregnancy causes tender gums and extra sensitive teeth, so for that reason alone I would wait!

I heard no whitening during pregnancy and stuck to that rule.

As far as work, they can do it just fine.
I had two crown repairs done during this pregnancy and two cleanings (i go every 4 months).

First, I broke a tooth which had a crown on it in the first tri, and obviously they couldn't wait till the end to fix it. The actual work started in week 13 I think. An xray was needed, which we did and all was fine. They used less numbing than they normally would but I didn't feel anything anyway.

Then I had to have another crown put on a tooth where I had a root canal done a few years back, and that was fine too. Again they needed xrays, and they used the lowest dose that would work and they 'double bagged' me with the protective covers to shield the baby.

It must be a personal/liability thing for some dentists but my doc said there was no issues with treating pregnant patients. She is an excellent dentist in my area, winner of 'dentist of the year' awards many years in the row, so I trust her judgment and knowledge.

Thanks Ladies!! I will skip the teeth whitening then.  I'm ok waiting until the baby is here to really fix my tooth since she was able to clean it out and patch it.  I just didn't want to leave it exposed and end up in pain and worse off!  I just couldn't think of any reason why her numbing me and drilling my tooth would cause any issues.
