Ok this board is sloooooooow. What are you all making for thanksgiving besides the obvious? My job is the veggies, I'm making roasted root vegetables and then green bean bundles wrapped in bacon.....
We're going to DH's parents' for Thanksgiving, and DH is making his famous whiskey glazed carrots and a veggie lasagna. I don't cook for Thanksgiving, but we host Christmas dinner at our house, and I have some awesome stuff planned for that. :-)
We are cheating and buying a Whole Foods dinner It comes with a 2 hour turkey, a couple premade sides, and a pumpkin pie. It's just the three of us, so it's nice for DH and me to be able to relax together instead of spending hours in the kitchen. We will probably throw together a green bean casserole, since the WF meal does not come with any green veggies.
We've done WF a couple of time (see above: ericalee don't cook) -- and it's great! Especially on the (rare) thanksgivings that we are home just me, DH, and the kids.
We had our ex-nanny over on Saturday (she had to quit for health reasons- we get along wonderfully with her) since Thurs isn't a holiday here. I made turkey, stuffing (not inside, like DC said, but I still call it stuffing), green bean casserole, and mashed potatoes. Since it's just me and a European-sized oven, I keep things to a minimum. We have cranberry juice to get the cranberries in there Oh, and then I made pumpkin bars again for dessert because I like them much better than pumpkin pie.

We have lunch with my IL's and supper with my family on Thanksgiving. It's all extended family, with traditions that were set in place long before we got married, so.... we don't bring anything. Not that I haven't offered, it's just that everyone already has their dish that they bring and nothing else is needed. I will probably take a drink to my family's get-together so that I don't feel like a total mooch.
As far as the food, it's pretty much the same at both places- turkey, potato filling, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, green bean casserole, dinner rolls, and pie (pumpkin, apple, and cherry).

Ok I have to ask...where do you live that you have potato filling??? My DH is from central PA and I NEVER heard of this until we started dating 11 years ago. They have it at every holiday get together....depending who makes it, the recipe varies slightly but I am wondering if its weird that I havent heard of it...or its weird that it exists!~

It definitely gave me some flashbacks as well -- my maternal family is from Reading, PA.

We are in central PA, very close to Reading actually I love potato filling! Never would've thought it was a regional dish either!

Ok so funny. So its a regional thing! One Christmas my mother in law gave me le creuset pot with the recipe inside. Im like uhhh am i supposed to make this now??
@sagen I do love it...it was on my list forever, I registered for it for my wedding and never got it so I was excited. I must admit though...its VERY heavy. Its heavy on its own, then you pack it with a pound of potatos and its worse. It was a great gift though..definitely something I never would have splurged on myself.
@pinesnow If it were my inlaws, I would tell them to shove it. Good grief...you are a saint.
Trying to get my mom to let anyone bring anything is like pulling teeth with a pair of pliers...difficult and quite painful, even though every year she b****es about how no one helps her. DH is bringing fudge (no one used to make it before we got together so that one is not difficult), and I finally got tasked with Jello salad. Which, both DH and I hate Jello salads, so I am making this instead: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/strawberry-pretzel-salad-recipe.html I will probably make pumpkin bread and bring that too.
Mom's already pissed that my grandma (her MIL) is bringing sage dressing because she puts so much sage in it that it stinks up the house. She's especially mad because she makes stuffing every year and takes it as a personal insult that my grandma brings her own. So...should be fun.
We're going to my in laws. DH makes cranberry apple sauce and I'm bring wine. Which I will need to drink, because my patents are coming too and my in laws (mil, fil, sil, and sil's wife) are all mad at me. Which is a story for another thread.
I want to hear this story.

Oh and snicker doodle bread
Anyone, anyone?
Okay, @kleigh926 - I've never heard of potato filling (midwesterner here) so I had to look it up. Looks yummy!
And @DC2London - just let me know what time to be there. Sounds delicious.
We lucked out, sort of. In-laws are hosting and we have to travel 3 1/2 hours to get there, so we don't have to bring a dish. But MIL decided to cater the turkey which I think is a little lazy, especially since she's retired and has nothing else to do, but I can't complain because we don't have to bring anything. And I really am grateful that we don't have to bring anything!
I haven't changed the menu much. I won't be making lumpy mashed white potatoes this year--that was a "my dad" thing and I really just made them for him. I'm also nixing pecan pie this year bc of the nut allergies in the house AND because I hate hate hate corn syrup.
Brined smoked turkey
shallot and tarragon gravy
stuffing (or dressing or whatever. We don't cook it in side the bird)
roasted brussesls sprouts
roasted garlic chive mashed yukon gold potatoes
roasted butternut squash or roasted rainbow carrots (depends on if I can get the rainbow carrots at the farmer's market Tuesday when I pick up the turkey)
potato rolls
cranberry orange relish
pumpkin pie
cinnamon vanilla whipped cream
@DC2London - can you explain your process for brining? My turkey has been pretty dry the past few years and I am want to try to brine it this year, but am scared to try!

I'll do stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, and not sure what combination of veggies/sides I'll do. A friend is bringing pie/tarts/cookies.
