Side sleeping

How soon do I need to be sleeping on my side?. I am a stomach sleeper and I'm only 5 weeks. Is this something I should be doing now or can I wait until I have a belly? Does anyone know or do you guys get those body pillows to help you start adjusting to side sleeping?

  • You can sleep however you are most comfortable. That goes for, pretty much, the entire pregnancy.

  • I am also a stomach sleeper... It's going to be hell when I have to be on my side!  Everything I've read says you can stay on your stomach until it becomes uncomfortable (that you would know).  I am def going to get a body pillow.  I've read some threads where people spent money on a special pregnancy pillow (between $50-100) and some where people just used an inexpensive body pillow from BB&B. Not sure which road I am going to take.

  • I slept on my stomach pretty much my entire pregnancy with ds. The last trimester or so it was sort of half on my side, half on my stomach. Sleep however you are comfortable.

  • My only concern is the blood cutting off thing. Everyone tells me on my back when the baby is heavier it will cut off blood and on my stomach I'm pretty much putting too much pressure on it. I guess like every one is saying I will just stop worrying until my body tells me to.
  • I have to sleep on my back right now because my back is so effed up. I'd give anything to go back to the fetal position sleeping I know and love.

  • I'm a stomach sleeper too. With my first pregnancy I started to sleep on my side around 20 weeks or so. I was a first time mom and paranoid. But I plan to sleep however is comfortable this time around.

  • Back sleeping definitely grows increasingly uncomfortable as you grow bigger. Your body will definitely tell you if it doesn't like something though.

  • Last pregnancy I slept on my stomach until 35 weeks. Find a comfortable position and go for it. Your body will tell you if you need to move (or the pissed off baby in my case).
  • I think they only say no back sleeping after the 4th month.

  • You can sleep on your stomach Until it's uncomfortable however they recommend not sleeping on your back after the first trimester as your uterus grows. When you lie on your back the weight of the uterus presses on a major vein that goes to your heart and could affect blood flow to the placenta and baby. So back sleepers need to get used to side sleeping, I slept on my left side most of my first pregnancy.
  • You will know. With my last I couldn't lay a certain way without instantly feeling dizzy and nauseated. I had to build a pillow nest to help me sleep comfortably. But as always, talk with your medical professional.
