sushi?

My doctor actually said raw sushi is fine, just avoid high mercury fish like tuna. Did anyone else get different advice? ALL I can think about eating right now is a mango tango roll from the local sushi joint, but I just don't see how raw fish can be ok.

  • If it is a reputable, sanitary restuarant with high quality food, I think you would be fine. I don't eat sushi anyways, but I think the concern is mainly getting it from a questionable place.

  • Yup! My doctor told me it was ok too. I haven't had my first appt yet but called to make sure. Like the pp said as long as it's clean and a reputable place you should be fine. Shark, king mackerel, swordfish, and tile fish should be avoided. Tuna is fine in moderation... I believe no more than a 6 ounce serving a week (could be wrong on the serving size though).
  • The actual raw fish isn't the problem, it's the fact that you're likely to get food poisoning, a parasite, or be exposed to some kind of bacteria.  Your immune system is suppressed while pregnant and the risk of becoming deathly ill from any of the above is small, but potentially devastating.

Some doctors say that you should avoid it all together or that it can be fine in moderation (remember women in many countries eat sushi throughout their entire pregnancy and are perfectly fine.)  Most sushi is flash frozen which kills a lot of the parasites and things and if your sushi restaurant is very clean and reputable you probably wouldn't experience any negative effects.  The simple fact that you COULD is the issue.  Additionally, some people will recommend eating cooked rolls, but you have to remember that they are likely prepared on the same surfaces and with the same utensils as the uncooked rolls.

Sorry for the non-answer, but it's really up to you and what you're comfortable with.

  • This is amazing...I don't know why after not keeping any food down all day I feel like eating sushi...but I NEED it right now. Thanks ladies :)
  • Oh man I am craving Sushi now... I don't know what to do! Even though it's probably fine I'm not sure I'm willing to risk it.
  • I ate sashimi the other day and it was fantastic!

  • My OB actually told me no raw fish.  I knew I had read somewhere that I could as long as it was from a reputable place, but since my DH was in the room, it was a no-go. :((

  • It's fine. And if raw is something you are afraid to do, go with tempura sushi....equally as delicious. :-)

Aww. My husband seems to think I know it all when it comes to babies and pregnancy so he defers to my decision (smart man )
  • I love sushi and am not giving it up just because. Over the last year my husband and I have gotten more skilled at making it at home. All this talk of sushi on the board today makes me think that I should make some this week.

What do you usually make? I mostly make rolls. We have an awesome seafood supplier here though so I'm working up to trying tuna or salmon nigiri.
Philadelphia rolls, Avacado rolls, tempura shrimp rolls, crab rolls. And sometimes our own concoction of leftover fillings

We only do rolls. If you have an Asian grocery near you that is the cheapest place to get supplies. I got a 50 pack of nori there for under $10
  • This made my day. I love sushi and have been missing it so bad!
