Previously broken tail bone. Risk vaginal birth?

I broke my tail bone 3 years ago, and it has been brought to my attention that it would probably re break during vaginal birth.

Would a C section be a safer way to go?
How bad would it be if it did re break?

Already having a lot of pain in my tail bone due to the weight of pregnancy...

Re: Previously broken tail bone. Risk vaginal birth?

  • Mine has been fractured four different times and my OB hasn't mentioned this possibility to me at all.

  • My MIL previous to birth had broken her tailbone, then re-broke it both times during the birth of her two kids. Maybe there are some medical advances that can help prevent this now. Have you mentioned the tailbone concern to your doctor? They would have the best advice to prevent it again.

Let's see... The first time I was sand-hopping and landed on a salt deposit. The second time we were playing ball in school and I attempted to leap over a desk and had a really epic fall. The other two were also from falls. I'm a shockingly klutzy person and it injures more easily every time. DH is terrified of what will happen this winter since I always fall at least twice. It's kind of ridiculous. I also broke my foot falling out of a pair of heels. And my arm falling out of a swing.
  • I broke my tailbone about 10 years ago and it didn't occur to me as an issue now either. I'd recommend asking your doctor. They'd know better than us. However, at the time I broke mine, the doctor told me that more than half the population breaks their tailbones and never knows so if that's the case, I think we'd be seeing this issue with vaginal births a lot more often.
