decongestant?

Uuuughhhhh I have a terrible cold and I keep seeing mixed things online about what is safe to take during pregnancy. Called the nurseline at my OB but sometimes it takes a few hours for them to call back. Anyone know what decongestants/cold medicine (if any) are safe? I know you can take benedryl but that will knock me out for hours. I took plain Tylenol early this morning and it helped with my headache but not the constant noseblowing or inability to breathe out of my nose.

Re: decongestant?

  • I'm currently taking sudafed. You can take the normal sudafed - nothing multi-symptom. I'm still blowing my nose a lot but overall I feel less like ass than I did 3 hours ago.

  • I'm taking regular Sudafed, and also Afrin super moisturizing congestion relief formula. It works great!

  • Neti pot and hot ginger tea with honey work like a charm :) Seriously,  grate maybe a tablespoon of ginger into hot water and add a tablespoon of honey. If you have a tea ball for loose leaf tea you can put the grated ginger in there and let it sit for awhile. It really helps clear things up. I was too paranoid to take anything except tylenol when I was pregnant with DS, and ginger tea was my go to. I luckily haven't had any real colds this time.

  • My doctor gave me this list at beginning of pregnancy for cold and sinus problems: clariton, allegra, zyrtec, mucinex, sudafed, benadryl, tylenol sinus, and chlortrimeton. She said included any with D (example mucinex-d).

I've never tried Afrin. Will that help the pain way up in my sinuses? B/c it bothers me in the middle of the night a lot...
  • Afrin is the shiz.

I also like bennedryl as well for runny itchy nose, but you can really only take it at night because it makes you drowsy.

  • My doctor gave me a list of acceptable medicines when I was sick a few weeks ago. They included Sudafed and Claritin for nasal decongestants, and Robintussin and Mucinex for cough.
