AW/Question - Cervix Cauterization?!

Hi all! If you look back in my history you can see a few Crazy Train posts about bizarre spotting since ovulation. Well I went to my OB today because it was really freaking me out. During my pelvic exam she said something along the lines of, "Interesting, it seems that your cervix is bleeding not your uterus." She was looking around in there and then reached for a tool and said, "I'm going to do a Silver Nitrate stick so that we can tell the difference." (I assumed it was a dye of some sort?) Before she had completed that sentence a stick was inserted into my vagina which she pressed several times on my cervix. She then told me I could expect blackish discharge and not to worry.

A few hours later I'm having serious pain and cramping and I searched google for what she did...pardon my french but she fucking cauterized my cervix?! Is this normal? Without any introduction or explanation, she chemically burned my cervix?! I am feeling super freaked out and stressed out. I'm not really sure what to do.

So my question - has anyone else ever had cervical bleeding (outside of pregnancy obviously as I am definitely not pregnant) and has anyone had this treatment?  Additionally, should I be freaked out that she didn't warn me as to what she was doing or am I overreacting?!

Re: AW/Question - Cervix Cauterization?!

  • Ugh. I am so sorry you had to go through that without adequate explanation from your doctor. In my experience (not with cervix cauterization specifically) if you call and request more info then your doctor should be able/willing to give you a much more detailed explanation. I am so so sorry for the extra anxiety her lack of communication is causing you. (((hugs)))

  • @PetraStonegirl, @greeneyes842 and @Sterling13 thanks specifically for your feedback about silver nitrate. I think what was most alarming was that I was left to explore it (aka ask Dr. Google) on my own. And then I'm sitting alone in pain when I read the word "cauterization." I'm grateful for this community where I can quickly have some fears dispelled.

I will definitely follow up if the bleeding and pain stick around or return next cycle, but I'm also around AF's arrival anyway, so once my panic subsided I realize the cramps might just be extra bitchy AF cramps with terribly coincidental timing.

Thanks again for all of your feedback and commiseration.
