Baby Names

spelling/pronunciation question

We're not seriously discussing names until after the anatomy scan...but we both think it's a girl (for no reason really). I like the name Madeline but would like it pronounced MAD-uh-lin rather than MAD-uh-line. I could spell it Madelyn I guess but that looks stupid. Thoughts?

Re: spelling/pronunciation question

  • Spell it Madelyn...it's a legit spelling and it's the way you want it pronounced.

  • Thanks for the input. I also hate the cutesy Y and would prefer the Madeline spelling, so I'm glad to hear that many people immediately pronounce that with a "lin" ending.

I had a friend named Caroline growing up that would always get super annoyed when people pronounced it like Carolyn, so I wanted to make sure i wouldn't be setting my kid up for the opposite of that situation.
  • I would pronounce Madeline Ma-duh-linn, plus it's the more traditional spelling, so I think you're more than fine.

The only time I've heard it pronounced "line" is in the kids' book, and that's purely for rhyming reasons.

  • DD is Madeleine with the -lynn pronunciation and we've had no issues with anyone pronouncing it wrong. I think the -lynn pronunciation is the most common regardless of which spelling you use.

  • I'd either go with Madeleine or Madeline, and just tell people.

TBH, I've never heard it pronounced -line

Spelling it Madelyn makes me cringe with all the excessive y use these days
