We are in a bit of an unusual situation. We have an in-home center and they are closed Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving, then 3 freaking weeks over the winter holidays. December 11th - January 2nd. She is contracted for 2 weeks paid leave and all federal holidays plus 1 personal day. She moved all her leave together plus moved a couple fed holidays she opened for so she could take over 3 weeks off in December. We looked to switch my LO to a different center right away but haven't found anything available yet. FML.
That's ridiculous. It's such a hard time of year to find temporary childcare or take time off work too. What are you going to do?
LO's DC is closed from Dec 22 through the new year as a regular daycare but some of the teachers run a "camp" where they're open reduced hours on all days but Dec 25 and Jan 1. We are out of town anyway, so not an issue.
We use a small DC, they're closed Thanksgiving and the day after plus 12/24-1/2. We pay for that week around Christmas and New Years and in return, get a week "vacation" that we can use later in the year (we can take the kid out of school for a week and not pay for that week, whereas otherwise they do not prorate their rate like if she missed school for a day because she was sick).
DS's center is closed Thursday Friday for Thanksgiving, the entire week of Christmas, and the 1st and 2nd of January.
DD goes to a Jewish DC so they are closed minimally for Christmas (close 4pm on Christmas Eve and closed Christmas Day), but the rest of the schedule is similar to DS's.
They are also closed for Yom Kippur and were closed 2.5 days for Rosh Hashanah this year.
ETA last year DS's school was open much more than that for the Christmas holidays. It was a Wednesday last year and they were open the Monday before and the Friday after, which was probably a major headache for them so I guess they decided to close the whole week this time for simplicity's sake.
W-F of Thanksgiving week and the Dec. 23rd through Jan 1st. (8 days)
DH luckily gets a lot of vacation time so the days off aren't usually a problem. Also, DS will be in elementary school next year so it's nice that we are already used to the days off around the holidays.
At home daycare. Only closed the day of Turkey day and after, and Christmas Eve& Christmas day. That is why I chose my daycare. I can't afford to be taking off a week at Christmas each year when there are only two of us at my company that do our job. I am not sure what I will do when my kids are in grade school.

Our center is closed on Thanksgiving day and black Friday, closes early on Christmas eve, closed Christmas day, closes early on New Year eve, and is closed New Year's day. I heart out center, and make sure to give all of DS's teacher's a nice Christmas gift.
Ours is close thanksgiving day and I think Christmas eve and day. They are also c L is new years day. But I had looked into a lot of daycare and it seemed everyone had a different schedule.
I'm glad for this post because I was feeling annoyed at our in-home provider for being closed Dec 24-Jan 2, but I guess it's pretty common. I asked her if she'd consider working half days on Dec. 24 and Jan. 2 and offered to pay her, and she said ok, so that helps. Now we only have to cover 3 days instead of 5.
BFP #1 9/2010 (lost our baby at 21 weeks)
BFP #2 8/2011 (ectopic pregnancy)
BFP #3 10/2011 (chemical pregnancy)
BFP #4 12/2011 (Abigail born 8/15/12)

There are gyms and also YMCA's that do holiday camps for school aged kids. It is about the same rate as the DC centers in the area.
*sparky* Oh nice I never knew that! But I'm sure hours would be an issue for me.

I don't think it is unreasonable for daycare workers to get some holiday time. It is no different than it will be when you child is in school. It is frustrating to find care I know, but remember the workers want time with their family as well. On the flip side, some of them probably wish they could work b/c most daycare workers don't get paid for those days so I guess it sucks all around. Good luck to everyone finding childcare during those off days.
Our DC is an in-home as well. They are closed Thanksgiving and the Day after. But is closed for the two weeks at Christmas---following the School District closure. Kinda a bummer--but luckily I work in higher education and get most of those days off. DH and I only have to take 3-4 days off total between the two of us to cover that closure. It doesn't bother me much, bc like PP said, we will have to do the same thing once he is in pre-K/Kindergarten and beyond.

Center win!
Our last center was closed Dec 22 - Jan 2. This is a huge improvement!
