Input please-starting solids help sleep??

I've read it doesnt yet I've heard from friends and family that starting solids did help their little ones sleep better through the night. My almost 6 month old is currently waking up twice a night and Im hoping this changes soon w the start of some food in the next week. Did it work for you?

Re: Input please-starting solids help sleep??

  • It did for us. But right now he's teething so that went down the drain. We'd feed him puree food followed by formula around 5 or 6 pm. He'd go to sleep shortly after that. I'd feed him 6oz at 10 or 11 when I go to bed and DS sleeps through the night.

  • Doesn't help! We've only been doing solids for a week but so far it hasn't changed her sleep at all. she's still up 5 times at night!

  • Nope. Solids for a month now and no change. The only thing that helped was sleep training
  • No change! Been doing solids for 3 weeks now and last night she was up evey hour! Pretty sure it's teething related but we have had zero change in sleep patterns since introducing foods.

    Curious-what method of sleep training?

  • When I added a 3rd small feeding I noticed a difference but I don't know that it's really helped that much. Sometimes it makes it worse because it's harder to digest.

There is no conclusive evidence demonstrating that eating solids results in longer sleep stretches. also, it just makes sense. consider this:

i eat solid food every day, and i still wake up periodically (even before kids). sometimes i use the facilities, sometimes i just roll over and go back to sleep, sometimes i lay awake reading or whatever until i'm sleepy again. regardless, i'm not sleeping for 8-10 hours solid. it's the nature of sleep, so i can't expect LO to do it - it's just not realistic. what is realistic is helping LO to learn to go back to sleep on his/her own, so you don't have to constantly get up and help him/her.

sadly, there is no "sleep-through-the-night" secret. we all have good nights and bad. just roll with it, Mama. try to savor these precious moments. soon enough, they won't need us as much as they do now.

and truly, isn't it just the sweetest thing to hold your baby for a while once s/he falls back asleep? i just love that sleepy face and warm hand on my arm. my heart melts every time.
