Cold weather momma's

Okay we are getting dumped on right now. I think I'm in for a long winter, but that's fine. I have hats, mittens, snow suit for Hannah, but no boots yet. (Wanted to wait till it got cold cuz man do her feet grow fast!)

What are you doing for winter boots? Any recommendations? Also yay or nay on scarves. We have one small one with a Velcro closure so I figure it should be okay. This is her first winter where she can really walk and will want to play in the snow.

We got boots at walmart because my LO wears a 2 still. I say if you live where it's less than 10 put a scarf on to play outside or for longer periods I prefer the micro fleece toddler neck Warmers.

I haven't bought them yet but I am going to actually spend good money on boots. Only because she is in daycare and they go outside any time it's over 32. This means she'll be out a lot and I don't want her feet to be cold. She's a 4/4.5 right now - I"m thinking I'll get her a 5 so they last all winter....

For the record if she wasn't in daycare - I would not be spending as much and would go cheaper, because I don't see DH and I taking her out a whole lot this winter.

We got Carter's boots 50% off so far they have only worn them once so I don't really know yet if they are great or not.

I ordered boots for DS from Carter's for 50% off, plus a 25% off coupon.  Like @JBDamonM said, DS also goes outside at DC anytime it's over 32 so I think he'll get some good use out of them.  I got them a size up because he won't be in his current size much longer and we have a hard time getting boots on his fat feet, so I hope they fit!

We went to REI and tried on shoes. They usually wear a 6 in sneakers and a 5.5 in other shoes. A 5 was a comfortable fit in regular socks. However, after talking to another mom in the store, we went ahead and bought the 6 because we also got some wool socks and the boys were able to run just fine in the larger size. We got the Kamik Snowbug3 Insulated boot, which was normally $42, but on sale for $30. I like the way they Velcro around the calves so we can make sure and get a good seal with their snow bibs. Amazon says the sizing for this brand runs small, but it was fine for us.

No real thoughts on scarves. I'd been wondering the same thing myself.

Yeay where can you get real gloves for toddlers? The little knit ones are a joke with snow!

@LeahB - are you in chicago? If your midwest and telling me Target boots are warm enough, I may rethink my decision

Last winter we just had a hat for LO that strapped under the chin and didn't have a scarf. We have a similar hat for this winter. Last winter we had booties from MEC that I was happy with. This year I bought him a pair from joe fresh. I think they were about $20. Said was good to -25. LO will be out daily unless it is colder than -35 I'd say. We haven't had a good dump here yet though so I don't know how they will fair in the deep stuff. Our snow tends to be wet and alternate with rain so I wanted something that was waterproof fairly high up the boot. I think we bought a size 9 as he is outgrowing his 7s in shoes now. As for skin protection I concur with a good slathering of Vaseline.

We used Baby Bogs and still have a pair (we have done 2 pair). They are warm, flexible and waterproof and come in small sizes. They are kind of spendy though. Now that DS is 2, I think we are going to graduate him to a bigger snow boot type thing.

For the hat/neck issue, I put a fleece hat with a chin strap on my LO. It covers the part of his neck that his jacket doesn't. If I zip the jacket all the way up, then there is no flesh showing.

When I put a bike helmet on my LO, I put a balaclava on him, and that has a built in neck cover, so you could go that route as well.

Lastly, mittens. They suck, mostly. I finally bit the bullet and got some Stonz Mittz. They come in all kind of sizes and seem to be the only kind that mostly stay on and go over the sleeve. They are also warm. Hurray!

Please, please keep the snow away from here a little bit longer. I am not ready...

I don't live in the snow but we go to my parents cabin in Lake Tahoe in the winter and we found great "real gloves" at REI for toddlers last year when DS was 2.

I found boots at a secondhand store that were Toy Story that I HAD to buy since T is OBSESSED! I think they were probably originally from Target or something. They seem to have good insulation but I did buy them a little big so that he could have thick socks. I say nay to a scarf, but mostly because I don't think T would keep one on.

Thanks for starting this thread!  DD has just  started walking, so I'm sure in the dead of winter she will be running....I honestly hadn't even thought of snow boots!  Mother of the year award to me!  :-)

Um, it's been in the 20's in what will be my new home all week.  So... guess I gotta start thinking about all this stuff, huh?

I have Target boots for A, some waterproof mittens from TJ Maxx and a knit hat and scarf that my grandma made. She's 3 and goes to preschool so she needs to bundle up. I still have to buy her snow pants.

I don't know if I is going to play outside much this winter because she has Reynaud's syndrome which means her hands and feet get cold really easy and she can get frostbite. She's only 1, so we'll probably try to keep her inside as much as we can. She has some fake fur lined soft boots and a fleece hat that ties under her chin. She won't keep on mittens but I just pull her coat sleeves over her hands.
