33 weeks and swollen ankles??

this just started for me. Has anyone else started having swelling of the ankles and feet? Occasionally I get the shortness of breath and my head feels like it's throbbing. Is this the baby putting pressure on my lungs??

Re: 33 weeks and swollen ankles??

  • Yes, my feet feel like water balloons by the end of the day. Some swelling is normal, but if you get sudden extreme swelling let you doctor know ASAP.

  • Yep. Swelling happens and is normal......and sucks!
  • Yes. My swelling is the worst if I have to sit for most of the day. Walking/moving around helps big time for me.

  • Yes, they're not too bad yet, but I've been feeling the soreness that comes with the swelling, in my feet AND my hands. Ugh.

  • Mine started around this time with DS I've been able to stay off my feet more this time around so it's not so bad, but compression socks and TONS of water also help.
  • My cankles are getting worse, but I'm mostly upset about my hands swelling a little. I play piano several times a week (and as my job) and have always had pretty muscle-y fingers. It's really distressing to see them get chubbier. My wedding rings are tighter, too.
  • It hasn't hit me yet (32 weeks today), but I feel like any day now I'll be getting swollen ankles & feet again.  I had major cankles for several weeks last time with DS.  I bought some compression socks - loved them!  Also, eating bananas, avocados, and other foods high in potassium & making sure you're drinking plenty of fluids helps!!
Myles was so pumped about the baby . . . until he figured out he'd have to share all his toys!!!

  • I would just mention your symptoms to your dr since you are having throbbing headaches along with the swelling. (Especially if the headache doesn't go away) It could be a sign of pre-e. Like others mentioned decreasing salt intake and increasing water intake will help a lot! :-)

  • I second PP and say mention it to your doctor, just to be safe. One of the first signs of pre-e is swelling, and bad headaches are a symptom, too.

I'm 33 weeks and knock on wood, I'm not having any swelling issues yet. But it's completely normal, so I expect it will hit me eventually.
  • Yup my swelling has officially set in. Compression socks help with my swollen feet. My hands have a little swelling, my rings were stuck the other day and needed coconut oil to get them off. Just going to wear a simple band until baby arrives.

  • I had some swelling last week at 32 weeks, most likely due to not drinking as much water as normal (my company was in the middle of an audit of which I was very involved in). After resting and catching up on water intake over the weekend the swelling went away and so far this week at work it has not come back.
  • I'm 30w 1d and have noticed swelling at the end of the day for the past several days, especially in my feet and ankles but I woke up in the middle of the night last night and had to take my rings off because my fingers were so swollen.. kind of a sad moment.. they're back on this morning though (: I think I may invest in some bigger "fakeys" so I don't feel so naked when it gets to the point I can't wear them at all!
