S/O How much sleep total is your LO getting?

DS2 has been having a rough time with sleeping for the last few weeks....usually waking up at least once a night and really early morning wake up calls.  I don't really remember what the normal average number of sleep hours are for this age.  What are your LOs doing?

Right now - DS2 usually naps for 2 hours during the day and then probably gets 9 hours at night.  So about 11 hours total for the day.  That doesn't seem like enough to me, but maybe I'm wrong... :|

Re: S/O How much sleep total is your LO getting?

  • DS sleeps about 11 hours at night, with one wake up (occasionally zero wake ups).  He'll take one nap from 1.5 - 2 hours most days, but not every day.  On the days he doesn't nap, he'll go to sleep earlier and very easily.  So we're not completely regular, some days naps, some not, some nights a solid sleep, some night a wake up.

As long as your LO seems happy and functions, I wouldn't worry.  Like with food, some kids sleep/eat more than others, and it will fluctuate within the same kid.

  • DD sleeps 8 til 6 or 630ish then will take about a 2 hr nap so.... about 12 hrs total

Now, my DS at this age would sleep 12 at night (7-7) and then take a 2-2.5hr nap but that kid still loves to sleep and would probably do that if left uninterrupted at 2.5 yrs old!
  • DC posted this a while back...I've kept it refer to since:

It sounds like you are in the normal range.  We do bedtime at 8, usually he wakes around 7, and then 1.5-3 hour nap during the day.  But DS has always been a sleeper.

  • Usually 10.5-11 hours at night and 1.5-3 hours for nap. So 12-14 total.

  • DD sleeps about 11-12 hours at night, and she usually takes a 1.5-2 hour nap. I've noticed more recently though if we're out of the house and can't get her down for a nap until after 2 pm, it's likely that she won't take one at all. That's what's happening right now actually. She's in her crib, but I can hear her quietly playing.

  • DD goes to bed around 8 and wakes between 7-730 with 1-2 wake ups per night. But we are in a weird separation anxiety time right now. And she sleeps around an hour for nap.

Jamie still sleeps more than Simon. They both go down for bed at about 9PM and sleep until 6AM (9hrs). Then Jamie naps from 10A to 11A. Both of them nap from about 1P to 3P, and then 5P to 7P. Simon has cut out that mid morning nap, but we always make him take the afternoon and evening naps or he ends up having night terrors. We never let them go more than 9hrs at night - they are far less grumpy if they have frequent naps throughout the day instead of cramming all of their sleep into the "night" hours, and they rarely stay asleep for more than 8hrs straight anyway (they usually wake up before we do and then just hang out in their room until we get up at 6). Between naps and them waking early, they each probably sleep between 11 and 13 hours total for every 24hrs.

  • Down around 9:30 ( I know, I know. It's so DH and I can both see her after work) and up around 8:30. 1-2 hour nap. 13 hours at most.
  • Bed between 830-9 and up between 630-730. He usually takes about an hour nap. Occasionally I get more out of him. So 11-12 hours total. He wouldn't nap at all and still function pretty well if I didn't make him take one.
  • I'm LUCKY of she goes down by 830. She's been on this 3am wake up, with what seems like forever. Not sure what totally hours are, but its not a enough

  • Let's see...

She wakes at 8am-ish every day. She almost always gets a two hour nap (if she skips it she makes it up by going to bed earlier). And she goes to bed between 8:30-10:30 depending on when she woke up from her nap.

So... (Math) ...12-15 hours in a 24 hour period, depending on the day

FWIW DD is also two weeks younger than the youngest Feb baby

  • Bedtime is by 8:30pm and they usually wake at 7:30am. They nap for 1.5-2 hours in the afternoon. So about 12.5-13 hours total per day.

@ericalee27 If your DS2 is waking early, is there any way you could rock him back to sleep? We used to do that with DS when he would wake around 6am, and it took a while (weeks, if not months!), but his sleep pattern finally shifted.

I'm assuming he's going to bed in overnight diapers, but if not, that would be something to try to extend his sleep. Also, blackout curtains and a noise machine have helped if you aren't already doing those too.

  • DD does 9-10 hrs overnight and 1.5-2 hr naps, so 10.5 - 12 hrs, 11 seems to be the mode in my data collection.

  • 11 hours at night, occasionally 12. During the day a 1.5-3 hour nap (although since we've got construction going on in the house right now that was cut drastically short yesterday and she was in a horrible mood in the evening because of it). So 13-15 hours / day.

I am so jealous of you mamas getting 13-14 hours out of your kiddos!!!!

It really is the early wake ups that are killing me.  He's been pretty consistently waking up at 5am - and that's even better than the 4am he was doing right after the time change (Oooof).

I would be really happy with 6 am at this point!  Thanks for some ideas @lc&jw

We do a sound machine, and it's pitch black in his room when he's waking up because 5 am(!).   Diapers seem fine too.

I do try to rock and coax him back to sleep but DS2 is the type that he goes from being asleep to banshee screaming/wide awake in about .083838 seconds.  I don't know.  For now, I am just trying to keep him in his room in the dark until at least 6 (with me, because if I leave, banshee screaming that wakes up DS1).   Other thoughts???

DS1 had some early wake up calls around this age too but I don't remember it being this long or every.single.day.

  • Im going to say probably around 13 hours a day give or take. We sleep around 11 hrs a night (sometimes 10.5, sometimes closer to 12)...then naps are btwn 1.5 and 2.5 hrs.
