Global fee

I was just wondering if any of you ladies had similar experiences previously or currently are dealing with this.

I received a letter from my OB office stating that there is a global fee that includes office visits, delivery, and hospital fees totaling around $600 after insurance. They want me to start making payments on this starting now and request it be paid in full by February. They also state there could be extra fees and also depending on what my insurance actually covers I could owe more because of that.

I have already been receiving statements for ultrasounds and bloodwork and paying them as they come. I'm just not sure why this is handled differently and before the delivery even takes place. Why would you pay for something before it happens? Hopefully someone has some experience with this or understands it better and can help out this clueless FTM

Re: Global fee

  • Yup. I'm jealous of your global fee, mine is several thousand. We start making payments this month and it has to be paid off by March.

  • Oh and this will sound stupid but there will be a separate hospital bill for baby. As a ftm I KNEW there would be bills for the pediatrician and any testing they did on baby. However, for some crazy reason I thought our global fee was OUR hospital stay, turns out no, baby actually gets it's own set of bills. Even if you room-in you still have to pay a daily nursery fee. Was really angry to find this out when DD was 8 months old ( angry at our insurance at the time not really the hospital). Had I known beforehand I could have budgeted for it and not had that nasty little surprise of $2,000 bill. This time we will be prepared for the fact that "global" fee has nothing to do with baby.  I wish I had understood that the first time around.
  • My doctor does this. Our out of pocket will be around $350.

  • For me the hospital charged separately from my office. They are providing different services.

  • Luckily my husband is an accountant and deals with specialized Medicare reimbursements and knew all about what a global charge was.  I do HR and knew all about deductibles co insurance etc. It was no surprise when we had our last one that it would cost about $6k or so.  This time it should be a little less.  We also contribute to an HSA which is a life saver.
  • I just feel like every time I open the mailbox there is a new bill for something and I get that the medical cost of having a baby is a lot but I feel like they could be billing me for god only knows what like... cord cutting fee and I would be like "ok guess that's just part of having a baby."

    Sorry end rant
  • My practice does this as well. But they give you the payment breakdown at your very first appointment. We pay around a hundred a month until right before delivery and that takes care of my midwife. Then we will get a hospital bill after delivery, that thankfully since I am a hospital employee I will get 50% off.
