LO drinking water?

Does your LO drink sips of water? If so, how did you get him/her to drink it?
My LO is 8.5 months old and refuses to drink water. He can suck out of the Nuby sippy cup with the soft silicone spout no problem but seems to dislike the taste of water. He now eats 3 solid meals (2 puréed meals and one baby yogurt and puffs meal) and has started drinking a lot less formula. I know he's getting plenty of calories but am trying to make sure that he stays hydrated. It seems like he's having fewer wet diapers even though I haven't kept an exact count. Any other suggestions on how to increase LO's fluid intake would be very welcome! :)

Re: LO drinking water?

  • Yes, Levi drinks small amounts of water daily.  He has a few ?3 ounces.  He drinks some out of a sippee and it is a great way to get him to learn to use it.  He also loves to have me tip my glass to him when I'm drinking it.

  • LO LOVES water, ever since the first time she had it. She drinks about one ounce with each solid meal (3 a day) using this cup. She would drink more if we let her but we don't want her filling up on water.

  • I'm lucky if LO gets a drop or two a day.
He doesn't like sippy cups, doesn't take a bottle and I'm too lazy to grab a proper glass to hold and serve him, so he usually gets nothing.

On the few occasions he does get water it must be room temperature because he hates it cold.
  • J's not big into water. I offer it to him with his dinner in a sippy cup but he has more fun throwing the cup around than trying to drink from it.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about the fewer wet diapers as long as the pee is still pretty light in color. As babies get older they get better bladder control.

  • I have tried a sippy cup but she has not learned to lean it back to drink.  may try to find one with a straw i think she could use this no problem...

  • We have had no success with sippy or straw cups. I do forget to let her practice frequently though.

  • She figured out the straw and loves water. We offer a sippy at meals, but she probably only drinks about an ounce at each meal.
  • We've just finally started to have success with the Dr. Brown's soft spout sippy cup. She holds it herself and has taken a few sips from it, but doesn't seem really interested. I need to remember to keep offering it at meals.

  • Thanks ladies!! I will keep trying to offer the sippy cup on a regular basis and will also try giving a formula bottle before the solids instead of afterwards. LO is probably getting enough to drink anyway and I'm just having a paranoid FTM moment.
  • We just put water in another one of the milk bottles and they drink out of that, it might make it easier for your lo to drink to get use to it first in small amounts
