Baby Names

Boy name advice

so DH and I have narrowed our boy list down to one. Hendrix but.... My dad hates it. Although he's not a fan of Jimi Hendrix in the first place. It's also a town in Oklahoma which is where I live. Anyways what do you guys think of it.

    It's a last name

ETA FWIW I ADORE Jimi Hendrix, but Hendrix is not a FN and I wouldn't use it personally

Another thought (true story) at a baby class I was at there was a baby Jagger. I know it's a legit FN but in the back of my mind I was thinking "those parents chose that name bc they thought it was cool the way Mic Jagger is cool to THEM." I thought the name was annoying.

Obviously I think Jimi is waaaay cooler than Mic but all preferences aside I feel like there are classier names out there that nod to your favorite artists (I.e. Naming your son John or James or Michael is sooo much more awesome than naming your son [or Heaven forbid daughter] Lennon or Hendrix or Jagger)

  • I would assume you guys are HUGE Jimi Hendrix fans. Like worshipers. It's a better name for a pet.

  • Also - the nicknames for that name are ROUGH. I would use it for a middle name if your heart is set on it.

Well I'm. Not big on nicknames at all. They don't make sense to me if you want to name a kid this name just do you can call them something else. What's the point? Just name them the nickname.
  • It's soooo hipster. Like your baby will pop out in skinny jeans and a retro cardigan with a mason jar going on about being a locavore and craft beer.

This didn't make much sense to me lol. I think overall this means you think it's trendy. I have no idea about the skinny jeans or mason jar. I'm really not caught up on the trends.

    Hendrix is laughable.

It sounds like you are trying too hard to be cool and name your kid something awesome. It's an incredibly tough name to be taken seriously. In fact this name came up recently and it got a lot of negative feedback so I would say that very few people IRL are going to think it's great.

I really didn't think Jimi Hendrix was cool popular or even really all that relavent anymore.

I can totally see your point in this. I think micheal james or John are way to plain. I fel like he would think we didn't care about his name as much if we just went the plain boring route. Since we already have a daughter named Emayah. I feel like her name is differnt enough his should be so what differnt as well.

  • I'm not crazy about Hendrix.

  • I personally do not like Hendrix and dislike that it is a known city in your state. But I am actually a fan of surnames for boys first names... So I'm not completely against the idea here.

  • Here in Iowa, I feel like every 4th kid I run into is named Jagger and it irks the hell out of me because that damned song runs through my head every. single. time. I also see a lot of Kinnick's which is a name of the big-time, locally famous, QB for the Hawkeyes and name of the stadium where the hawkeyes play - lot of people want to name their kids after one of them and it's kind-of an eye-roller and NOT very creative or original.

  • wait a second, didn't we already have a post about Hendrix recently?  I'll assume it was from you OP.  My answer is the same now as it was then.  AWFUL!
Unfortunately, it is two different people considering this name within a week of each other: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12481292/thoughts-on-hendrix

My thoughts remain the same, but I'll add the only thing worse than naming your kid Hendrix because you're a hipster and the artist is so cool, is not realizing that Hendrix is hipster or that the artist will remain relevant and actually was so cool.

    VOTE on my Name List

  • If I met a child named Hendrix, mind first thought toward the parents would be, " grow up" . A very immature choice.
  • I like Hendrix for a dog, not for a person. It makes me think of Hendrick's Gin. Henrik is good, though.
