Pregnant after a Loss

A very light question: coffee

Hi y'all pregnant ladies!

Where did you stand on it while you were TTC and where do you stand now? A cup a day? None? Decaf? A couple of cups? Didn't believe the hype and did what you wanted?

TTCAL. My two morning cups of starbucks are one of my few great pleasures in this world!

How's that for a light topic, unless you like it black...

Re: A very light question: coffee

  • I didn't think about it too much when I was TTCAL - but typically kept it at 2 cups or so. Now, it's about the same - 1-2 cups of coffee.

  • I had weaned down to 2 cups of half-caf while TTCAL (I like mine strong but with a ton of milk), and then decaf while pregnant until the aversions kicked in. I had a decaf latte on Saturday, but only drank about half. Meh.

It's safe to have a bit while pregnant, but nausea keeps me from finding the love :)

  • The problem is that a cup of coffee has a wide variation in the caffeine involved. Most sources say that up to 200 mg a day is considered safe, but others say that you should keep it to 100 mg. So, for example, Starbucks says that a 12 oz latte has 150 mg caffeine in it, which is a lot for a pregnant woman.  8 oz. of the brewed coffee on their website would have 180 mg. Two cups of either would be a lot!

I personally got down to 1 cup of tea a day (usually black, approximately 40-50 mg caffeine) while TTC and in early pregnancy. I had to increase it a bit at the end of the first tri because I was so tired I couldn't get any work done. I did a cup of homemade half caff per day. Not sure how many mg that was, but pretty sure it was less than 100 mg. Trying to wean myself back onto tea now.

  • I am not addicted to caffeine, so it hasn't been that big a deal for me. As a general rule I stick to decaf unless I am feeling especially tired that day.

  • I'm not really a huge coffee drinker, but I love some tea! Didn't change anything while I was TTC, and still have a cup black tea in the morning. Lattes are my coffee weakness and for those I opt for decaf.

  • While TTC I had one huge cup (probably 2 cups' worth) in the morning every day, and sometimes 1 cup in the afternoon.  1st tri I cut back to 1/2 cup a day, and 2nd tri once my doctor assured me that 1-2 legit cups were fine, I started having 1 cup a day.  I am too nervous to do 2 since I use Starbucks and make it pretty strong.

  • I don't drink much coffee anyway, and avoided it entirely through most of this pregnancy except the occasional day where I was really dragging.

A few weeks ago, however, I went out with some girlfriends to lunch and they wanted to get ice cream afterward.  I've got GD now so I couldn't have the ice cream, so I got a 12oz Illy coffee which was delicious and very strong!!  After nothing for so long, I think my body overreacted and I had BH and cramping for hours after.  It was so not worth it & I won't make that mistake again!  I think I just overdid it going from nothing to 12 oz of supercharged coffee.

  • For absolutely no reason than my own neurosis, I stick to one to two cups of decaf a week. Your doctor is the best reference for this though if you're worried.

  • When I was trying to conceive, I stuck to (usually an espresso based drink), one or two per day. Prior to that I would drink probably two diet cokes and a cappuccino a day. Since becoming pregnant, I haven't had more than two sips of coffee (which made me incredibly nauseated in the first trimester) and I've had a total of three cans of coke in the last 14 weeks. My doctor said that as long as you're being reasonable (like a cup or two a day) not to worry about it but i've stuck to a lack of caffeine and actually feel better than I did chasing the caffeine crash.

  • I was never big on coffee, but for some reason now its a big pregnancy craving!  I've been steering clear, though - although after reading all this, I'm about to hop in my car and go to Starbucks...
