Babies on the Brain

A little bit of advice?

Hello ladies,

I'm trying to determine if my symptoms warrant a trip to the dr. My husband and I are not necessarily actively trying to concieve, but we'd be happy if we did. According to the period tracker I use, AF is due to arrive in 3 days but normally I experience spotting 4-6 days prior. So far I haven't spotted at all, and I've noticed some increased cervical fluid. Additionally I haven't noticed any bloating (I'm usually a whale 1-1.5 weeks prior to AF)

I'm experiencing back pain, some cramping, heartburn (I never get heartburn), swollen fingers, some dizzy/light headedness and mood swings. But no nausea or breast tenderness.  I took a clearblue test last night before bed that came back negative.  Would you ladies suggest getting blood work done or doing another test? Thanks!

Re: A little bit of advice?

  • Reason being that I'm due for my physical anyway, so I can book it earlier to look into that. Also, I left out that my husband and I have now been npnt for 3 years and this is the closest to any remote type of pregnancy symptom I've had thus far.
    Thanks for the advice ladies.

  • I don't know about your doctors but the ones I know only offer referrals and such to people that are actually trying and it has been 6 months to a year, depending upon if they have reproductive issues. I think its a waste of a doctors time for you to get blood work done because you need to have a positive test first. Also your biochemistry can change so those can be symptoms of PMS. Just my 2 cents.

  • As mentioned, I have an upcoming physical. Part of that includes routine blood work, so it's not taking any additional time away from my physician.
  • You could ask your doctor but I would just wait it out. You are going to know in a week or so anyway. I know having patience is a hard thing to do but not having it will drive you bananas when your TTC.

  • Thanks for the tip, however living in Canada, this is covered under public healthcare. I guess you could say I pay for it either way though, as my hard earned tax dollars is what covers the cost!

lol do you actually understand how taxes and healthcare work in Canada? My husband and I pay approximately $12,000 in taxes for public healthcare, but only visit the doctor at most, 2 times a year (most years we'll go to the doctor once each for our physicals, as we're generally very healthy)  If anything, I'm not using the healthcare system enough for the amount of money we put into it.

Perhaps you should direct your comment about "selfishness" towards people that actually abuse the system.

Uh asking for a test you don't actually need is abuse of the system...

In the US it's not uncommon for people to pay $12,000 a year (that's only $1,000 a month) for private health insurance and still they have large deductibles to meet before insurance covers their medical treatments.  Yes there are years that you will pay more in premiums (or taxes in your case) than what you "collect" through medical costs, but there will also be times (like when you have a baby or a major illness) where the amount you use will exceed the amount you pay.  You argue that you should get to do unnecessary tests just because you pay more than you have used for the year.  Would you like it if the government denied you care because you exceeded the $12,000 amount you paid this year?

Imagine if every woman in Canada ran to the doctor because they had what they thought were pregnancy symptoms and a negative test and wanted an appointment and a blood test.  What do you thing would happen to your taxes then?  The increased expenditures on health care would most certainly make the taxes go up.  That is what people mean by you driving up the cost of health care with unnecessary testing.

Go get your physical if you are due, but there isn't a need for a pregnancy test.  Home tests are reliable and you are not pregnant.  Assuming you have been having frequent unprotected  intercourse (2-3 times a week) 3 years of not trying/not preventing is probably enough to start basic infertility testing if you are interested.  If you haven't been having frequent intercourse, then your lack of pregnancy could just be due to poor timing and I would take a few months to improve your timing before seeing a RE.

    PAIF/SAIF Welcome!

  • @dani_brewer‌ I totally get it, because it takes me 6-8 months to get an appointment with my gynocologist. My family Dr is nearly impossible to get in touch with and I end up going to a walk in 99% of the time (wait times are at least 2 hours) I'm still waiting for a call back to schedule my physicial. As mentioned, I rarely see a doctor and for that reason, I do feel I have a right to take something up with my/a doctor when I feel it may be warranted, especially when I'm actively contributing to the system.
  • I love how this went from a lame "am I pregnant" post to an educated (from one side anyway) debate about the Canadian health care system. Bravo ladies!
  • Hi Sramlackhan,

Try to wait a couple more days if you can.... I know its easier said than done. Let us know the outcome and best of luck to you.

And my tax dollars as well.  People like you are the reason our taxes go up.
  • Hello ladies,

Quick update: I've had increased nausea and dizziness so I took another test today, but this time I used frer and fmu & got a positive result! Super anxious to test again but I'm trying to hold off until Monday or Tuesday.

I was able to get an appointment with my family doctor in 2.5 weeks, so if the next test also provides a positive result, I will have everything checked out and get a proper confirmation! :)

To the ladies in here that showed support, it is very much appreciated!

Thanks so much! I unfortunately can't make an appointment with my OBGYN that way. For whatever reason, they prefer that the family doctor do initial tests, workups etc and then put in the appointment request. I likely won't get to an appointment to see her for at least 3 months  :|
  • Thanks MandJS,
That makes sense. Not looking prenatal care right now though just gotta get my physical and my referral in, to ensure I have an appointment by then. Ugh I feel so sick right now, I can't even see straight! :s
