Adoption

Higher BMI people/health forms

We have completed all our paperwork, other than our health forms. (So interviews are next!)

My dr appointment isn't until December 5, but I'm terrified high blood pressure or high bmi/weight (bmi is close to 35) is going to stop us from adopting. Anyone know the rules? Have experience?

I'm working on it, but obviously it won't be good by December 5!

Re: Higher BMI people/health forms

  • Are you doing IA or DIA (sorry I can't remember!)?  Domestically I was told it shouldn't be a problem, but internationally I know it varies by country.  My DH and I also have higher BMI's (guesing we are also in the 30s) and were told we would not qualify as PAP's in South Korea.

We ended up FTA and our weight was never an issue, and practically speaking I have seem some people larger than us at our training sessions...so there's a lot of flexibility.

Your agency should be able to help you with questions like this.  Good luck!

  • Domestically, it shouldn't be a problem at all. My BMI is high also and my doc said I was physically able and of sound, mind and body to adopt a child.

Internationally, I have no idea what their rules and regulations are.

June      2014--Started our Home Study (all paperwork &fingerprinting that ensued)
August  2014--Finished our Home Study and Officially Waiting

  • One of us has both. It wasn't an issue. The DIA health form just needs to state that your dr feels you have a reasonable life expectancy.
  • I'm "morbidly obese," with HBP  and metabolic syndrome. My partner has diabetes and is "obese." We adopted a newborn. Don't worry. The form just needs to say  "This person will likely live until child reaches adulthood"

  • Thanks. I've been stressing about this for weeks. I wish I had asked sooner. :)
