Cloth Diapering

Wanting to CD...where to begin?

I never considered CD until I met a ton of women in the town we live in who all do cloth diapers.  A close friend of mine has an 8 week old and she just started CD-ing with her a few weeks ago.  She doesn't use the extremely expensive kind and they seem to do just fine...

DH and I have decided this is the route we want to go...especially with our desire to have a large family.  We consider it extremely cost-effective and who wouldn't love to save money on diapers???

I'm not due until May but I have been trying to look around/do some research.  I truly just don't know where to start.  I have lurked on this board in an attempt to get a little bit of a grip on everything but finally decided I just needed post and get some advice/guidance...even just what types are good and affordable.

A bit about us...
We are military and I am planning to SAH so our budget is tight...aka we aren't sure we can spend money on the most expensive types of CDs out there.
We also would love to be able to use the same CDs with multiple kiddos in the future.
We will NOT be doing a diapering service...I know how to do laundry. :)

  • Yep, another vote for prefolds or flats with covers if you're looking for an economical option to get you through multiple kids. GMD's site is great but you can buy flats and other covers elsewhere, too.

Chiming in with prefolds + flats too. Flats, especially, are very versatile if you are often moving or traveling and dealing with variable laundry situations. And if you end up with a very squirmy baby, you can stuff them into pockets so they are a bit easier to get on. You could have prefolds/flats as the core of your stash and then a few pockets/AIOs for daycare/babysitters/whoever else is diapering your child.
  • I'll echo others with the suggestion of prefolds and flats, and also add that if your goal is to have CDs last for multiple kids, don't cheap out. It's good to have a varied stash, so you don't need everything high-end, but the brands that are pricier are more expensive and popular for a reason - they last! It's worth the initial investment now to have things last for more than one kid than having to buy a lot of new stuff for each kid. And if you don't like things, better known brands hold their value and have great resale.
