2nd Trimester

tdap?

Are you getting the tdap before your baby is born?  CDC website recommends it during every pregnancy in the third trimester.  I had it  5 years ago so why do it need it again? Just to pass antibodies onto newborn?  I'm going to ask my dr next week but I was curious what everyone else is doing since pertussis is making a comeback.

If the cdc recommends it then I wouldn't question it.

  • I got my shot at 2 weeks ago at 32 weeks and my husband also got his. The grandparents will be getting the shot as well. My husband and I also got the flu shot as well. It is not something I would question!

  • There is a Whooping Cough outbreak where I live.  I will be getting tdap at my next OB Visit!

  • Just for clarity, I'm not considering not getting the shot.  Every few years seems excessive though.

The CDC recommends getting tdap during third tri. Why are you thinking of getting it now instead?

OB says it can be dangerous to the baby for me to have Whooping Cough while pregnant.  I work in a Pharmacy around sick patients every day.

If your vaccination has lapsed, getting vaccinated because its going around your area may take higher priority than getting it ideally in 3rd tri. You should get it in 3rd tri even if its not time for a booster yet, but if it IS time for a booster I see not waiting.
    Yes, it is definitely overdue.

  • My understanding is that the efficacy of the pertussis vaccine declines after a few years, so getting a booster during pregnancy gives you the best chance of passing antibodies on to your baby that will last (hopefully) until your LO can get his/her own vaccinations.  I got a booster three years ago right after DS was born, before the CDC started recommending it during pregnancy, and will get another one at 26 weeks this time.

That is exactly why the CDC recommends it. Pertussis kills babies.

    Yes. Not rocket science.

With this plan, the baby won't get the antibodies, which (as stated above) is why the CDC recommends getting the shot during the third tri.

Then I will follow what my midwife instructs me to do then.  Didn't realize things have changed in such a short time.  I was told last time that my breast milk would also provide some protection too.  Learn something new every day.

She asked and Im not a scientist, nor do I get the shot, so I answered her question with what made sense to me. Is that okay?

--------------- Yeah, not going to argue it. You get yours. I won't get mine. The end.

Dude I love people who pull the I'm not a scientist thing.  I laugh my ass off every time I see it used for global warming, vaccines etc.  Doesn't stop people from making decisions on other topics in which they are not certified/trained experts but the "I'm ignorant so it's ok" thing is just pee in your pants hilarious.

    I won't be getting it.

I am one of a very few who are allergic to the pertussis vaccine. I went into cardiac arrest as an infant from the tdap. Then I caught whooping cough. My doctor says I have antibodies since I had whooping cough, so not worried.

But those around me will be getting vaccinated.

Wow! That must have been so scary for your parents! I can't even imagine.

So glad to hear you are still having those around you get vaccinated!

Same here. Due for my DTa shot, waiting til third tri for it. Hearing about Mom watching me turn blue as an infant is plenty of incentive to vac my babies.

This is wrong, though.  It doesn't matter if you just had it a year ago.  It's given in the 3rd Tri to pass it on to the newborn.  YOUR vaccine is still fine (for 10 years), but the baby needs the extra protection.  Hence the CDC recommendation.

Yes, my parents almost lost me. And I have permanent scarring on my lungs because of the whooping cough as an infant. So we will be making sure everyone who wants to see the new baby close up is vaccinated.

  • I won't be getting it. I had a bad enough reaction the last time I got one that I'm not willing to do it again especially while pregnant. Even if that weren't the case though I would be cautious because they have NEVER tested the safety of this vaccine on pregnant women. They just started recommending it in the 3rd trimester to "pass it on to the baby" even though there hasn't been a study to support the assertion that immunity transfers that way either. It's one thing if it was actually backed up with science and safety studies but it's not.

If, god forbid, your infant gets whooping cough (which is not out of the question as there have been outbreaks all over the US and Canada this year), know that it is your fault for not protecting them by getting the vaccine while pregnant. That KILLS infants. Kills them. But you had a "bad reaction," which likely means a slight cough or a rash, the last time you got it so...avoiding that is totally more important that keeping your child alive. Good call.

This isn't an obscure disease. People get whooping cough regularly. Adults are sick but survive. Children can easily die from it. I think a slight adverse reaction to the vaccine is a more attractive option than death right?

Can you please quit spewing your anti vax bullshit on all of these threads?
  • I did not get it. But there is a great reason why you should. Pertussis is ugly and if you can do anything to avoid it, do it. I'm not an anti vaxxer. Vax ftw! I honestly can't tell you why I wasn't more proactive about getting it. I think I was mislead when I was told that since I already had it and my family had it then baby would be OK. Little did I know, getting the shot while pregnant decreases the risks even more. Get if!

    It's a BOY

I will, I get all vaccines recommended. Then again, my 2 year old will be 3 months post bone marrow transplant when #3 is born, so I want ALL THE VACCINES! :-)

When I was pregnant with DS1 I did not get the TDAP in my 3rd tri as I had just recieved it 18 months before. Yes as PP said I realize that the CDC has since changed the stance on this, but as someone who worked for a company that had to follow all sorts of rules by the FDA, I take what they (and the CDC) say with a grain of salt as they will probably change that stance in 3-5 years (if not sooner). I'll ask my doctor and follow her instructions--which they just got back to me and said that I will get on since it has been over 2 years. I'll get one at my last appointment befor eI deliver at 38 weeks. YAY more needles.

  • With DD, my doctor told me i would be offered the shot in the hospital after delivery along with the flu shot if I hadn't already gotten it (I was due beginning of November). Ended up having to get it at 20 something weeks because I stepped on a nail while getting her room prepped. My doctor said I didn't need to get it if I had a booster in the last 10 years, but if I couldn't figure out when I last had a booster that it was safe to get and would pass along some of the benefits to my baby. Won't need to get it this time since they'll only be 20 months apart.
