Tummy time question

First time mom here, my dd is two and a half weeks old now and I was just wondering when everyone started introducing tummy time to their LO? I have read to wait a while and also to start right away. Also, did you use anything to help assist the first few times before they got the hang of it?

Re: Tummy time question

  • FTM here too. For the first month I just did tummy time for LO on my tummy. Then I transitioned to the floor for just a few minutes. I have a mat with a mirror and a little pillow to prop him up. Sometimes I'll lay him down without the pillow too. We're up to 5-10 mins at a time 2-3 times a day at 9.5 weeks. He gets fussy after that long as I'm sure it tires them out!! So as soon as he's frustrated I pick him up or roll him over and play for a little bit. :)

  • I've been doing tummy time on me or DH since birth, and in the floor since his cord stump fell off. Also, now u kinda feel bad, because, I've been reading LOs are only supposed to do tummy time for 5-10 mins, but I have DS do it until he cries, which can be up to 30 mins! Oh well, he's got pretty good head control and I only do that a few times a week --the rest if the time, he does tummy time on me.
  • My LO figured out how to roll from tummy to back super fast because she hates it so much, so we usually do it on my tummy so I can keep her on her tummy. Occasionally we do supervised tummy time with boppy and she tolerates that longer.

I was told to start tummy time as soon as her cord fell off, and at her 1 month appt her doctor really pushed that she needed at least 5-10 minutes at a time a couple of times a day.
