3 y.o. wants to replace our dog with a cat

My 3 y.o. Just said excitedly "when our dog dies we can get a cat!"

How do I handle this? I told her that we love our dog very much and that he is part of the family and that we will be very sad when he dies. In fact, we will be so sad that it may be a long time before we get another animal, if at all. I told her pets are not like toys, and we can't just replace them.

What else can I do about this? Our dog and her get along, but he is not very affectionate. She's dissapointed by this. Worried she resents him.

We've been doing training with him since she was born, and he has warmed up to her slowly, but it will still be a while.
