Cloth Diapering

How to talk my DH into cd?

I'm a sahm so I will be the one doing the washing & majority of changes, but he is really turned off by the idea of washing poopy diapers in our washing machine. Any thoughts on how to convince him it isn't unsanitary? I'm pg with our 3rd, & would love to try out cd. Thanks for any new ideas in this argument.

Re: How to talk my DH into cd?

  • DH said he didn't want the poopy diapers washed in the same washer as his clothes, but after a lot of reassurance that it would still be clean, he agree. Granted he didn't have much choice if he still wanted me to wash any of his laundry. It's not like they were even going in the same load.

The argument that the diapers were clean enough to go back on the baby's sensitive skin and not be an issue also helped.
  • Loading the player...
  • My husband has the same issue, but I just started buying diapers anyway.  I tried the "it'll end up in our washing machine anyway" argument, he said ancillary poo is different.  Then I moved on to the fact that we both have pretty sensitive skin and our baby might too (first time parents here), and he's still not thrilled but I think that softened him a little.  But mostly I just started building a stash and told him he could use disposables.

  • Mine said the same thing, but it doesn't bother him now that we're doing it.  I just sort of did it and let him catch up later, but if you need him to be on board maybe look into a trial.  That way you're not really investing more than you would on disposables and it would give him a chance to see what it's like.  You could also get through the NB phase that way and then invest in a OS stash if you want to continue with CD's.

  • Money really seems to be the kicker for a lot of dads.
  • There seem to be a lot of dumb husbands. I would've called mh dumb if he was like "eww gross"

  • MH and I just had this argument. LO is six months and I finally decided to give it a try. He has her the two days I work, so he can use sposies then if he wants, but I'm wondering if he'll warm up to it. Our washer has a ten year warranty, so I mentioned that, which may have helped.

These posts always make me feel like I'm the only wife in the world that is like "Oh by the way this is what we're doing".

yeah, I mentioned it to dh, he did the math and said as long as I used the cloth for whatever the breakeven point was between using cloth and using sposies I should give it a try if I wanted to. Since we're estimating ds to be in diapers still when he is 4-5+ years old, our savings for using cloth are much greater than average for one child. The sturdy bulk of cd has been easier for dh to handle too....sposies tear too easy in his hands.

  • Oh, one other detail, I wash the family under clothes with the diapers.....and dh made the comment that his underwear are cleaner for being washed like a diaper than they ever were being washed normally. He no longer gets urges to bleach his under clothes. So if clothes washed with the diapers are cleaner, clothes washed in other loads will be just as clean as they were without cloth diaper laundry.

  • Yes that's the deal here, too. We're using cloth diapers. Oh ok. The poop in the machine thing seems to come up a lot but really is such a non issue!

I don't think I could get away with that, but sometimes those whites should be treated like a diaper when washing.
  • Does he have a favorite sports team, video game character etc?  Can you order a diaper with that on it from Etsy or elsewhere?

  • You can explain that you get the poop off the diapers first. Spray/scrape/swish. Nobody is just throwing solids poop straight in the wash. (I don't think!)

Honestly, that was immediately where my mind went when I read about CDs. Then I saw that you spray the poop off first and it made sense.

I started adding them to my diapers just to bulk up the load to get stew.....and it stuck for working so well for me.

  • Thank you for the suggestions. I think I will get through the NB phase (and adjusting to three kids phase) and then just get a few to try it out. Maybe use liners to make it easy to dispose of the majority of solids & reassure him that I will run "clean washer" cycles more often. I know he sounds silly, but I don't want to just ignore his concerns.
  • Has no one mentioned that a diaper trial might be a good idea? You get all/most of your money back if you decide CD is not for you. And honestly NB is the best time to get started/save money, since they go through so many diapers each day.

Julian's Drawers offers both NB trial and NB rental. If you decide to go this route, order it well in advance to make sure they are in stock.

There are others but that's the one I have experience with.
  • I know I'm late to this party, but I just told DH that we'll be CDing. No objections.

Also, last night our friends' 1 month old had a blowout on me (poo on my shirt, his clothes, blanket, and the couch). DH was so disgusted by it and was relieved when I told him how many fewer blowouts we will have with cloth.

Get away with what? Washing underwear in the washing machine?
Get away with washing the underwear at the same time as the diapers. While DH usually isn't home when I do the laundry and is perfectly fine with me doing CDs, I think he'd flip if he saw me washing them in the same load as any of his clothes.

okay.  we were just pointing out that the concerns are…wrong.

and I honestly think just trying a few is kind of a waste of time.  what if the three or four your buy are not the right kind for your kid? then you'll hate CDing-but without a good sampling of all that's out there

and I think liners are a huge PITA unless your kid has completely ploppable poop.  and they're not necessary until after starting solids.  poop until then is very liquidy and will make the liners a huge hassle

if mh made any comment about how I shouldn't be washing HIS clothes "this way orthat way" I'd kick him in the balls

he knows that the clothes are getting cleaned in the washing machine, right?

  • I wish this thread would go away.

And yes, I know that commenting on it is only keeping it alive.

    Dear Immature Douche Bag Husbands,
Stuff goes in the washer dirty.  It comes out clean.  Get over it.
    Sincerely,
The person who doesn't want to read anymore ridiculous posts like this again.

p.s.  It's only baby pee and poo.  Grow up!
