Maternity Coat Vs. Going Up a Size or Two

Hello! Yesterday was a chilly day in Chicago, and I found that my usual puffy winter coat did not zip around my bump. I am due in April, so I am anticipating quite a bit more bump growth but don't know exactly what size coat I am going to end up in. Has anyone had good luck with a coat that is designed for expectant moms or is it better to just buy a bigger coat and hope it's big enough for the whole winter?

Re: Maternity Coat Vs. Going Up a Size or Two

  • I just got a warm button up coat with a belt--kind of trench style. When my belly got big I left the lower buttons undone and tied the belt on top of my bump.

  • I bought a cute coat that kind of reminds me of a "baby doll" style dress at Goodwill.  When I checked the tag later on, I discovered it was a maternity coat.  My point being, it's so cute that I've always worn it regardless.  So if you do get a maternity coat, it won't really be a waste as long as you like that kind of style.

To me, it'd make more sense to get a maternity one and leave the buttons undone on the bottom if necessary.

  • Thanks. I ended up buying a coat that was 2 sizes too big. It is kind of a swing coat style, so I think it will allow room for the baby to grow over the next few months. Hopefully this works out.
