Pierced Nipples during/after pregnancy

Hi, ladies. I have had my nipples pierced for a little over a year. Someone said I could keep them in, and when it comes time to breast feed, I could just take them out and put them back in after the feeding. However, I see this as being a problem. Everyone I know that has breastfed, says that your nipples hurt so bad that you dont even want to touch them. If that's the case, how am I supposed to just take them in and out? I know, it's a pretty off-the-wall question, but I REALLY don't wanna get these puppies re-pierced. I also plan on having more than just this first baby, so the re-piercing thing isn't even an option. Lol

  • Lol I just always liked them. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought they looked sexy (and they do), so here I am. Ha!
  • My sore boobs are cringing at the thought of pierced nips right now  #-o

  • I had mine for about 7 years before DD was born. I took them out when I was probably about 8 months pregnant. I thought about taking them out and putting them back for each feeding, but decided that would be more work than my sleep deprived self could handle.

    I don't plan to get them re-pierced.

  • I've had mine pierced but took them out long before I was pregnant with my first kid.
I couldn't imagine taking them in and out after each feed. If you have seen how ravenous a baby can be at the boob, sometimes you can't even pull your bra down quick enough for them before a feed.
Think about how your baby will be sucking on your pierced skin...heaven forbid you get infected somehow. My advice would be to say "so long" if you plan to breast feed.
  • My nipples started hurting as soon as I read this title. I don't have any experience but I don't think you will want to keep putting them back in and taking them out. If you really want to breastfeed, then I think you might have to sacrifice your nipple jewelry for some time.

  • Putting an earing in my nipple (or touching it all) while breastfeeding in the early weeks makes me want to barf it hurts so bad in my head. Ouch, maybe research using a nipple shield.

  • I took mine out until I was done Brest feeding. It was just one less thing to worrie about.
  • I kind of want to scream at the thought. And then I just want to curl up and whimper. And I have the pain threshold of an angry, drunk Russian bear.

But you know what? You're going to figure out what works for you pretty quickly. And then just roll with it!

  • Thanks, everyone for your thoughts. I, by no means, am putting my piercings before my baby. I'll take them out if I must, and won't regret it or think twice about sacrificing anything for my baby. Also, they won't get infected. I've had them almost two years. Any infection they could have possibly gotten, there is no chance of getting now. It's just like pierced ears. No biggie! I've never had a baby, so I have NO clue what I'm in for, which is why I came to you lovely ladies. Thanks again for the great advice. I think I'll try at taking them out for feedings, and if it proves too painful, bye bye piercings! Lol every time I think about the baby drinking, though, I can't help but laugh to think my nipples will be like a sprinkler system.
  • I took mine out before I gave birth to my first baby. Actually it still looks open (I had it a long time), so I'm sure if I want to get it redone it wouldn't be that bad. Pain aside, I just can't imagine the hassle of putting it in and out while breast-feeding.

  • I took my piercing out at 8 months and I had the piercing for 10 years. My DD could not latch properly and I cannot describe the pain that my nipples endured. IMO its just easier to take it out and leave it out. Plus when your milk comes in and you becomd engorged, your ladies will be hurting. You dont want to fuss with your bra let alonesome extra hardware.
  • I had mine done for two years. I ended up taking them out about week 8. Mine were too sore at that point. You can nurse with them but you won't really know if you'll be able to keep then until after you've started.
  • I had mine also.. I took my bars out when I found out we are expecting! Sad day :( it hurt like hell having them pierced but time to be a mama
