Cloth Diapering

How many layers would you sew into a cotton flannel doubler?

I cut all the rectangles for my doublers tonight, planning on sewing them tomorrow since I live in an upstairs apartment and sewing can be loud. I did sew one before it got too late, and it seems fine, but looking for thoughts from other sewers.

I used four layers in the one I sewed. Two outer layers of a cute print, and two inner of some random ugly print I had in the closet. I stacked, sewed, turned and top stitched and like how it came out. It's pretty small (probably 4in by 8in, maybe bigger but I didn't measure after it was turned), as I need them to fit into my NB AIO (BG.) I am wondering though if four layers is enough. Should I got for six?

Re: How many layers would you sew into a cotton flannel doubler?

  • Granted I don't have any flannel in front of me, but six layers seems really excessive. NBs are so tiny that just the few extra layers gets super bulky quickly and can cause gaps.

Have you tried the diapers with the doublers on a stuffed animal at all to see how they affect fit?

  • I actually just tried the NB diaper on a friends baby who is about 9lbs, and the doubler didn't seem to affect fit at all with  layers. It's small enough that it pretty much just fits right over where the sewn in pad is between the gussets. It's not really bulky at all, surprisingly. Maybe I'll make them just three layers just in case.

Can you tell I'm a newb at this? :)
