It's paternal maternity leave. The whole purpose is to eradicate gender inequalities. The father gets paternity leave separate from the mother's. It cannot be transferred to her. Apparently it's hugely effective and it's becoming very normal in some countries for the dad to stay home for a long time. It's making a difference with women returning to work.
I find it very fascinating because it approaches the issue from the opposite side. Not that it would ever happen in the US since we can't even get decent maternity leave. Still cool.

He swears up & down he'd much rather hire a nurse/someone to help out around the house the next time I have a baby.
Everyone is different though. I would love to get paid for 18 months!
