Job advise

I have been recently asked to make a lateral move. Lol at those words.

Since there is so monetary compensation, would it be acceptable to ask for hour changes? I'm talking an hour difference or less.

It wouldn't be wise to decline, correct?  I'm Willing to offer more details of interested.

Re: Job advise

  • I don't see the harm in asking, I also would think carefully about if the new position is one you would enjoy and how it may limit of expand your future growth potential.

  • Do your responsibilities increase? Is it a position with specific hours that are important or would it really not make a huge difference to the new role? Are you wanting an hour earlier or later? Which job would you like more?

  • Maybe instead of declining you could say "I would really like to stay where I am if possible as I prefer this position, but if I could adjust my day to start an hour earlier each day, I would have to reconsider."

In either position there is no growth potential other than learning different product and networking. I knew prior to taking the position there was no real room for advancement. My fear in saying no is that now I'm not a team player.

@tinyhumantoe I may say exactly what you said.

I don't know which I would enjoy more.  I would work for more people if I moved positions leaving more responsibility.  I don't feel the hours are really relevant but the company likes department members to work the same hours.

Thank you for the advice ladies.  I'm really stressed about this.

  • If you take this lateral move, would you be stuck in that position for a time period before being able to move?  Ex:  When we make a move we must occupy that position for 1 year before being elligible to change postions.  I declined a lateral move for that reason.

  • I think I need more details :-)

What do you do now, and what would you be doing? Are there increased responsibilities or any sort of contract that goes along with the new position? Do you like what is proposed as your work duties in the new position?

If you're not getting more money, I'd definitely be inclined to ask for a schedule change. It's going to be a lot easier to get that going in than to try to change it later.

  • @kissty, there is no rule such as time in a role. That would definately be a consideration if so.

  • since you mentioned there isn't a restriction on time you would have to stay in the role if something else came along (which seems to be a good thing) i think the other key considerations would be:

are the responsibilities if they are changing, something you are interested in doing?  are they are challenge to you?  would they help you develop new skills that could lead to a higher position?

what is the path of advancement with this new role?

do you know who you will be working for?  do you like him or her? what is their management style (ie. are they a micro manager or will they trust you to complete your work on time).  would you work well under this style of management?

who will your co-workers be?  the same group? new people?

i think that is all i can think of for now but if anything pops into my head, i'll respond again.  really the decision is up to you if this is right for you right now. and if this isn't something that works for you, you can use the answers to some of these questions when politely declining the position (i.e thank you for the opportunity but  i am really looking for my next role help me develop my xxx skills and i would like to take on increasing responsibilities in xxx)  good luck!

  • I'd also consider long-term goals--will what you learn in this new position benefit you if you want to seek a new job in the future?  Will it be good resume fodder?  Or will staying where you are and gaining more long-term experience in the same role be better?

I think it's hard for me to answer not knowing what your career plan is in the long-term.

  • My department is downsizing like crazy so I always wonder what happens if I say no to something. Why was the position brought to you? Do they really want you for this position or are they needing to clear out room in your current department. Unless you love what you do and can't imagine doing anything else, I am usually up for a change when the company brings it to me. If it is you that they want for this, I would be open to asking about other benefits to accepting the offer if they can not do a pay increase. Hours, additional PTO, different bonus structure, eligible for higher % raises or more frequent reviews for a raise. My company is huge so they cannot negotiate things like that but DH company does.
