So we celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas in my house. Instead of presents this year we're going to surprise the girls with an over night at the Great Wolf Lodge! At the end of the season last year I found this awesome advent calendar which is made out of burlap and has pockets for the days before Xmas. I want to fill it mostly with non-toys like "Christmas movie and popcorn night" or a gift certificate to get ice cream...

How cool! I need a visual because I suck at this stuff. I struggled with an elf on the shelf and we just make the data in or advent calender....I am a creative DUD!

Coupon for family room "camp out." Most cable companies have a Yule log channel during the holidays- the channel just shows a fire burning and plays Christmas music. Or you could do a real fire if you have a fireplace. But blankets/sleeping bags on the floor, snacks, stories, the works!
Ooh and my favorite. Coupon for a Christmas jammie ride. We do ours on Christmas Eve. We have dinner, get dressed in our pajamas, get hot cocoa in travel cups, and hop in the car for a drive around town to check out all the lights. My parents did it when I was a kid and it's a really fun tradition! Cheap and fun!
I grew up with an advent calendar that had experiences each day as we prepared for Christmas. Some of my favorites as a child were, "today we'll paint your nails" and "today we'll go to McDonald's for lunch". Neither of which are related to Christmas or preparing for Christmas...
You could also use things that you might already have been planning on doing like seeing Santa, doing a Christmas craft, get Christmas books from the library.
I may have to do the pj's dress up and drive around this year too! Save me a seat and some of the spiked hot cocoa!

@Frenchteachermama - this is so creative - what a great idea! I am hooked on the Playmobil and Lego Advent calendars myself since DD loves to open the little door and see what's inside each day.
For you, perhaps some type of charitable item - gather food to donate to local soup kitchen, purchase gifts for needy children?

@annibes I absolutely LOVE the jammmie ride idea!!!
@ksvend great ideas too! I my girls LOVE the McDonalds play space near by! And the gingerbread house is an awesome one too!
@hoppin747 Great idea about doing something charitable! We did the lego advent calendar last year and my 3 year old is so mean and would take the little bags, open them and then throw the pieces around the room while my 6 year old cried. I was going to do the playmobile one this year but decided that my youngest is still too mean.
