How do you prevent falls???

My SIL is five weeks ahead of me and fell today- scary scary. She is okay, but she was wearing flat boots when she fell!!!

Another KU friend of mine fell a few months ago.

So do you wear gym shoes to prevent falls?! This scares me.

Re: How do you prevent falls???

  • I'm worried about this come winter time when everything's iced over for months...plan to just very carefully watch my step!

  • Well the doctors freaked out with both of them because if you land the wrong way it can hurt the baby. I've noticed a KU person at work wearing ugly gym shoes with her prof clothes and thought it was weird but now I wonder...
  • I fell all the time with my second son. I wore flat shoes most of the time because I had ankle sprains most of the pregnancy. Once I was literally talking to someone and just fell over, I was so embarrassed. Poor guy freaked out.

So honestly I don't know how to prevent falls. There is a reason that baby is so protected inside of you. A little fall isn't going to hurt your baby.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I'd like to welcome you all to the Clumsy World! Born and raised here- it's all right- you learn to laugh at yourself and enjoy the bruises that frequently decorate your body.

You can't really prevent falling, but my best advice to you would be to slow you roll. If you slow down any falls or bumps you may encounter probably won't be as severe and/or you may be able to catch yourself easier.

  • When I was pregnant with my twin boys during the winter months with terrible ice and snow I did just fine. I couldn't see the ground but I never fell once! I don't think you should worry
  • I find myself holding on a little tighter to handrails when going up and down stairs but that's about it.

    @pintobean39 but don't you have meniere's? I think you get a pass:)

I just don't think this is something to get all worked up worrying about. Wear shoes with good traction and be careful.

Or hide under the covers until May.

Yes I do but that was 16 years ago before I started having my dizzy spells. Back then I just had fluctuating of my hearing. I have very weak ankles from screwing them up playing tennis so they don't hold me well especially once all that extra weight and your center of gravity changes. God only knows now how much I'm going to fall now that my equilibrium doesn't know it's head from a hole in the ground once I get big.

As far as the shoes, I wore shoes that had zippers across the top (they wore stylish back then) but it was awesome by the end of the day my feet were so swollen I just unzipped them. Towards the end they wouldn't zip. I'm investing in cute slippers this time, the heck with shoes.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • My only real fear when it comes to falling us grocery stores. I took s nasty slip in a store where something had spilled on the floor and it was clear so you couldn't see. Luckily I had a cart in front of me so I gracefully used it to slide into my fall. I'm sure it was comical to watch. So now that I'm pregnant I keep thinking about that time and always have my cart where I can use it to stabilize myself. I'm a klutz anyways so I guess I just feel I need to be prepared. :)
  • I am the queen of clumsiness.  In the span of 16 months, I fell up stairs and needed 5 stitches in my knee, I fell down stairs and broke my elbow, and I stepped off a curb and broke my ankle.

  • You can pray lol, thats about it.

I took an almost nasty fall, grabbed the back of a man's pants sitting on a barstool and almost took him down with me lol!!  Beware of restaurants where the booth is raised.
