milk protein allergy?

I used to be pretty active during pregnancy, but haven't been on much since B arrived.
I found out some troubling news today and am hoping for some support/advice.

My LO had a black tarry stool this am and at her sitter's, so I called the pediatrician.

There was trace amounts of blood. He feels like it is a milk protein allergy (I breastfeed and recently started drinking milk again, bc he suggested cutting down on dairy when her belly was gassy early on and had been doing much better) did some labs and is referring us to a GI specialist to be sure.

I am to cut dairy from my diet :-?? And see how that goes until we get in at the specialist.

My question is does anyone know much about this? I can't find much on Google
Also, should I (would you) nurse her this eve still or give her freezer milk from before I started drinking milk again.
Trying for our first since April 2011

I am no healthcare professional, but I'd go freezer. My son has a milk protein allergy we figred it out because he had a huge increase in stools daily for days and ended up refusing to eat he was so miserable and lethargic. He was hospitalized for weight loss/dehydration due to the allergy.

I've been dealing with milk protein intolerance for the past 2.5 months. Research it under MSPI and you'll find lots of info. Please be aware that soy intolerance is really common in milk intolerant babies, so don't go substituting dairy with soy milk or butter replacements. Kellymom has a great list of hidden dairy. The first grocery trips are a little daunting, but it gets easier.

It will take weeks for the milk protein to be entirely out of your system and his, so not nursing tonight isn't going to make a huge difference. Without visible blood, I would keep nursing, but you'll want to talk to your doctor for her opinion. For context, after months of elimination, my LO still has microscopic amounts of blood in his stool and the specialist is not concerned about it.

    Good luck!

My son is MSPI, but he's FF at this point and on hypoallergenic formula, so no real advice on diet.

The bloody diapers are pretty terrifying though.

It takes approx 2 weeks for it to leave your system my lo has milk & soy allergy I cut both out of my diet he does just fine now. As for freezer milk your better off to dispose or donate that milk cuz it contains dairy. Good luck!

Check out kidswithfoodallergies.org there is a breastfeeding (with allergies) forum that can offer support, advice, etc.

My first had bad allergies and continues to. This second one is showing signs of it too. It's an annoying elimination, but a happy baby is worth it!

IDK what I'd do feed clean frozen milk or milk-tained breast...Personally, I'd consider if LO was keeping it down (not spitting up a lot) and if there was visible pain. I'd BF if there wasn't too much obvious pain going on. I'd err on the side of fresh BM having better nutrients then frozen. If there was obvious pain and it was messy with spit up and diapers, I'd use frozen (I am in the middle of spit up and explosive diapers if you can't tell;) ).

My son has a milk soy intolerance. He's had it since he's been born. I was BF and ended up having to FF. He has to be on Elecare infant until he's 1 then they will reassess it. His is so bad that even the gerber rice cereal (has less then 2% soy in it) makes him really sick. So we have to use beechnut products.

I would use the freezer milk.
