My first visit I will be 1 day shy of me being 11 weeks.
I know i will have the internal exam/pap and all the normal blood pressure and I'm sure they will draw blood.
Im wondering if they will do a sono? My hubby will be out of town and very very sad to miss that.
I just want to mentally prepare for the disappointment if he wont be there for the sono. Its his first and he isn't happy about missing the appt as it is.......

  • Your history will take up a majority of the time. Blood work and most likely an u/s to date you.

  • Yeah I went in expecting to be 8wks and they said I was 7weeks. But my u/s was a small bed side machine and all we saw was a little blob lol. At least you should see alittle more.

  • My first US at 8 weeks took about 5 seconds total. He just checked to make sure there was a heart beat and I didn't need to be dated since I knew when I got pregnant. I was actually glad I didn't drag my husband in for the hour long appointment just for that.

I've had ultrasounds at 5 weeks.. 6 weeks.. 7 weeks.. 9 weeks.. lol  With this pregnancy, my first u/s was at 9 weeks exactly. They didn't let me hear the heartbeat.. only see it on the screen. I will likely have another u/s at my next visit at almost 14 weeks. They usually do one at your first visit so they can date you.  My husband actually hasn't gone to any of my first appt's.  Except for when we were treating with the RE when I was first pregnant with my son.. he went to those and the big anatomy scan with my son but he even missed the big anatomy scan with my daughter.. couldn't get off work. I had to take my mom. :(

He didn't come to my first appt. this time either.

  • I did tell him he wouldn't be missing much.

  • My doctor doesn't do ultrasounds- they send out to a specialist so there are no ultrasounds at regular visits. At my first there was the usual blood work, pap and listen to the heartbeat (had they not found that they would have sent me for an ultrasound). They may do a history as well if you didn't already have that call/appointment.
  • 11 weeks they might use a dopler and hear the heart beat.  That part is kind of exciting.

My 1st visit at 7 weeks was history and PG test and a brief internal/breast exam. Fortunately, DH didn't make plans to go to that one, even though I was told that sometimes the MWs did an early u/s.
2nd was at the end of 10 weeks, when they ran bloodwork. Then MW tried the doppler, couldn't hear anything, so she carted in the u/s.

Since each office seems to be a little different, I'm sure the scheduler would be happy to tell you what to expect!

  • My first appointment was at six weeks, and the nurse took my vitals, my OB spent a lot of time taking my history, did an internal exam, breast exam, and ultrasound.  Then I got sent to the lab where they took what seemed to be 14 million liters of blood and gave me a flu shot.  Finally, I met with the OB again in his office to ask any additional questions I had.

Since you will be 11 weeks already, I wonder if they may also offer to do the NT Scan and/or draw blood for NIPT (MaterniT21, Panorama, Harmony, or whatever your OB offers) - I had both of those things done at my 11 week appointment this past Monday.  You may want to at least ask about those tests while you're there.

I hope it all goes well - bummer that your DH can't join you, especially since you've said how stressed out he is.  Hopefully you will get lots of good information to take to him to calm his nerves!

  • @ewenner I do plan on asking for all those tests and I hope they will do them....and if they do i am REALLY hoping they put hubby at ease.

I really want him to relax.
