STM--potty training ?'s

I know this isn't the board for this, but I have questions and my board for DS1 isn't very active. So mom's that have potty trained:

1. how old was your LO

2. did you train with a seat on the potty or separate toilet?

3. did you use a certain method? or just go for it?

I am upset with myself that DS1 isn't potty trained but with DS2 surgery, and working full time I have not had time to commit to it but with thanksgiving I will have time at home.

I am nervous that if I train on a training potty that I will need to retrain on the big toilet. I may be totally wrong, and it may just by a myth. Like the whole nipple confusion with pacifiers and nursing.

really...I just want him potty training and I am looking for advice from STM. Thanks!

Re: STM--potty training ?'s

  • @nebraska84 Know you're not alone. Our son's are about the same age and mine isn't potty trained either.

I know it's common for boys to train later but it's tough when it's your kid and every other boy you know seems to have been trained before 3.

It's comforting to know @Avswolf 's boys were around 3 or a bit older.

  • 1. how old was your LO

    DS1 was 22 months, DS2 was 2 years exactly

    2. did you train with a seat on the potty or separate toilet?

Seat on the potty.  I had one of those kid seats that sits on top, but it ended up being easier just to teach them to straddle the toilet

    3. did you use a certain method? or just go for it?

We bought painter's plastic and put it down all over their carpet.  Then we holed ourselves up in the room for 2 days.  Every time he started to pee, I'd just say "No! Pee goes in the potty!" loud and firm, and then take him to the toilet. Lots and lots of pee on the floor the first day, but after a couple of days, DS1 totally got it.  DS2 took longer.

The whole process of potty training DS1 took 2 weeks.  After that he was dry all day (we used pull-ups at night for a long time)

DS2 was still having accidents a full year after we started, but it just kept getting less frequent until he finally stopped all together!

Only trained one kid, so not too much help but he was about 2.5yrs when he started showing interest/complaining about wet diapers. Unfortunately that was also about 2m before LO2 was born.  He trained fairly easily and was accident free for about a month before LO2 arrived and then he decided peeing everywhere was more fun.  When we'd try to encourage him to use the toilet he resisted mightily. Had I rode it out, perhaps he would've gone back quickly but I wasn't interested in finding out so I put him back in diapers for a few months. Then when we "retrained" he caught back on in a day or two.

I wouldn't focus on training him because he's "x" age, but if he's seeming ready and interested.

We used an insert on our toilet, not a separate potty because I wasn't interested in emptying pee/poop from a glorified bucket. He's not had an issue and prefers the toilet sans insert now and just holds himself up. He pees standing up now but when we first started training we had him sit.

ETA - we used a modified 3-day method, basically took away diapers altogether and just went for it. He was unimpressed by bribery or rewards.  I think those techniques will depend on your kid's personality. Mine is still a stubborn mule who will not be bribed into doing anything.

  • We had a little potty and a seat for the toilet. I started sitting DD on the little potty a little after 2 years old. Most of the time she didn't go. At about 2 1/2 she was mostly daytime trained. She didn't like to poop on the potty so we bribed her with m&ms. I think she was about 3 1/2 before she was in underwear for overnight. She is 4 now and still uses the seat on the toilet at our house, but is fine without it when we are not at home.

  • My DD was just over 3 years old.
We tried every method out there for over a year. Nothing worked!
My stubborn child just decided one day she was ready and that was it.
    We've never looked back.
