Baby Clothes Question from a PgALer

hi ladies! I am about 4 weeks from my EDD...oh man! :D and am in the process of getting everything ready for Vigorous Baby to come home. We are doing our registry completion this weekend and some final baby clothes shopping.

Right now we have - for size NB-3 mo - about 12 footed sleepers, 4 or 5 gowns, a dozen or so onsies (a mix of long and short sleeved), and a few (6-10) legit outfits. We also have socks and hats and swaddle blankets/halo swaddle me and sleep sacks.

Is that enough to start? What else do I need?

Thanks ladies!!

Re: Baby Clothes Question from a PgALer

  • I Loved the body suits with the built in mittens. I also had a bunch of mittens I bought when I got home that kept him from scratching his face. I have a pic of him at the hospital with a huge scratch! My guy was over 8lbs, but the 0-3 month clothing was way too big. I should have got more NB. You are so close! Congratulations, and wishing you well.

  • What you have is a good start. I would wait until LO arrives to add to the wardrobe (if needed). With DS I was gifted a ton of outfits. I literally kept him in sleepers with a indie underneath for the first 3-4 months. I even kept him in sleepers when he started at DC. They were just easier and warmer. Everyone has their own preferences and you don't really figure your's out until you try things out. GL!

  • I think you're probably good. Our DS grew out of the NB sizes really fast, so having a few of each item was plenty.

One thing I would recommend is a sleep sack in addition to the footed sleepers or gowns. (I gave up on the gowns that are open at the bottom, because his feet were too cold that way.) Where we live, it's getting really cold, so we dress him in a footed sleeper and then zip him into either a sleeveless or long-sleeved sleep sack, depending on how cold it is that night.

  • That is way too much IMO! I would take back half of what you've bought and exchange for the next size up! Babies grow like weeds, my 6 pound 14 oz was in newborn and 0-3 for not even a month. You really don't need that much!

  • So far I agree that gerber runs smaller.

I really like onesies that snap at the crotch, sleep sacks/gowns and swaddles. Also, the NB socks are big on my baby and finding a pair he can't get off real easy is a challenge.

Footed onesies aren't too bad, but it can be a challenge to get his legs and feet in & keeping them in while putting his arms in. And as mentioned above, they expose the chest during MOTN changes.

  • If anything that's too much in NB. With both my kids, I found they pretty much lived in footy jammies at first. My faves were the ones with mitten-cuffs...handy both to keep hands warm and for scratch prevention. For DD I went heavy on those and had a few of everything else. Have some swaddle options (DS liked swaddlepods, DD swaddle me's).

Socks on a squish are a joke. Another reasons I stuck with footies. Didn't have the patience to deal with those things on zilch for sleep.

I'd focus on the larger sizes. They aren't generally in NB for long...and from then on roughly every few months the first year you have to buy a new wardrobe. I'm in the midst of that now and lemme tell you, it's freaking expensive (as a side note, if anyone is on FB and wants an invite to a baby clothes resale group, drop me a pm).

Put his arms in first. If he's squirmy, you can do the top snap to hold it in place as you get his feet in. Also, with snap footies, you can do a diaper change without unsnapping it all the way up top.

  • I'm odd but both of my kids wore NB for 6-8 weeks and they both were 6lbs 13oz/20 inches. I didn't get any or buy any with my first and ended up venturing to Walmart on my way home from the hospital since since the outfit he wore home was my only NB item. My only suggestion isn't to stock up on a lot of seasonal items because you won't know the babies growth pattern at all...ever! DS1 skipped 6 month clothes all together....and that was the majority of my gifts!
