Woodstove users

We are considering getting a wood stove. The national grid bill was crazy last winter and there are rumors that it will be increasing this winter as well (we live in upstate ny) We have a small 800 sq ft house with a finished basement. We have gas heat, but according to our friends with woodstoves we wouldn't ever have to turn it on with the stove running. Does anyone here use one and do you really save a lot?

We have a wood stove insert in our fire place. Our house is about 1400sq ft. It does take some minding to keep the fire going but it's worth it. Our house is always warm and our bills are low.

  • Call your insurance company and be sure they are ok with a wood stove.  I work for State Farm Insurance, and we have been getting a lot of calls from people to get quotes where their current homeowners insurance company is dropping them because they have a wood stove.  State Farm is fine with Wood stoves as long as they are installed properly, to manufacture specifications, but we do charge a little more on homeowners policys if you have a wood stove.

  • Thank you for the replies! I will check with the insurance company, I never thought of that before. We are gng to put it in our living room and it sounds like it would keep our house nice and hot :)

Basically what everyone else said. I really miss our wood stove. Our old house was tiny and we only heated with wood. I miss that smell so bad! And how the heat would put you right to sleep! I don't miss going to sleep roasting some nights and wake up shivering though!
