Baby Names

Would you still consider "Morgan" a unisex name?

Just curious. This is a name I like for either, but worry a bit about giving it to a boy for fear that it will turn into a name like "Leslie" or "Shannon" that will be associated very strongly with females in the future. We still have Morgan Freeman, Morgan Spurlock etc. But the handful of Morgans I knew in school were all girls.

Re: Would you still consider "Morgan" a unisex name?

  • As a high school teacher, I've had 5 female Morgans and 0 male so I see it as a girl's name...but maybe that's just in my area.

  • I LOVE Morgan for a boy. I think boy first but I know it's more popular for girls. I don't know any IRL but there is a male Morgan on the Mindy Project.
  • I know a boy Morgan and a girl Morgan.

For me, I consider a name unisex if I see it written down and don't immediately make an assumption about that person's sex. For example, if I saw "Emily", I'd assume it was a woman. If I saw "John", I'd assume a man. If I saw "Avery", even though we see it on plenty of women, I'd still assume it was a man. "Dana" was a man's name originally, but if I saw it I'd assume a woman.

Morgan is one of a few names I wouldn't be able to guess just by looking at it. Others for me:
    Taylor
    Blair
    Casey
Riley (yeah, contentious on this board, but if I read "Riley Smith" I couldn't guess that person's sex)

  • Yes, I think it's one of a handful of unisex names.  It's one of those names that if I knew the person's age I would probably guess an adult Morgan was a man and a younger Morgan was a girl, but I think it still works on a boy.

  • I think it's unisex but the more I look at it the more it just sounds masculine.  My bff has a female friend Morgan who was dating a male Morgan for a while.  They were in their 20s.

  • Definitely unisex. It works well on both makes and females.

  • I am a Morgan and love my name. There was a boy Morgan a year older than me all through school so I always considered it unisex. It feels more feminine lately to me but maybe you could use a very masculine middle name to give it a stronger feel.

  • It's firmly unisex, but I love it on a boy. I actually know a baby Morgan. It's still in the 600's in the US, and falling for girls too, so I consider that fair game.

I similarly struggle with Avery. I think it's handsome and quirky on a boy, but there are so many girl Averys. If it was 'the name' I'd probably go for it.

  • My friend's 2 YO so. is Morgan so I consider it unisex. I prefer it for a boy though.

  • Quite unisex.  Totally fine on either.  One of very few names that applies to.

  • Unisex and perfectly usable on a boy IMO!
  • Well, I'm very glad to see so many people who still feel it's not only appropriate for a boy, but several who prefer it for a boy

Funny some of you mention the name "Taylor", we really like that one as well but more for a middle name (it is a family name). We like it for several of our potential names, Morgan included. Morgan Taylor.... guess we just REALLY want to leave people guessing huh? :)

What site do you use to determine baby name popularity??
  • Thanks!

That's really interesting- I have been looking at the popular names in my state by year, you can definitely see popular names dropping.

In my birth year the most popular name was "Ashley" and it was given to 2,059 girls in the state of MI that year (SN my mom almost named me Ashley, the nurse told her "wow that's our 6th Ashley born today!" And my mom changed her mind immediately). In 2013 the most popular name was Emma, and it was only given to 640 girls in MI.

Morgan cracks that popular list in a few recent years, but never many over 200 born in a year (most years less than 200). I'm not sure how much weight to give this in qualifying/disqualifying names!
  • Yes. For me, I consider a name unisex when I have to question the sex upon seeing the name. When I see Morgan, I'm immediately going to think "is that a boy or girl?" which would be the same with names like Alex or Sam.

Other names, like Kelly, Leslie, or Shannon, I assume are girls now, even though they were traditionally boys names.

I only know two people named Morgan. An adult woman and a 3 year old boy.

My daughter's name is Peyton Taylor. Taylor is a family name for us as well! I love to keep people guessing too. :P

I love the name Morgan on both girls and boys, please use it!
