Doctor/midwife

Hi all! This is my first baby, I am learning as I go here. I am looking for a new doctor or midwife. My doctor is very nice but she and her hospital have an extremely high cesarian rate. I know surgery is sometimes needed and life saving but I'd like to avoid it i I can. I'd like to switch doctors for a doctor or midwife that would support me in this. I'm 18 weeks and live in the bronx and work in westchester county. I'm the first in my crowd to have a baby so I can't rely on recommendations and looking for ideas. Thank you ladies!

Re: Doctor/midwife

  • Are you asking us for doctor recommendations?  The members of this group are spread across the country and we also have several international members.  This isn't the place for a recommendation if thats what you want, considering its not likely anyone even lives in your area.

Try your local board perhaps, or Google?
  • I recommend reading something like The Big Book of Birth so that you understand all your birth options. Most of your interactions during birth will probably be between you and your nurse, who you won't meet until the time comes. Therefore it is helpful to know ahead of time if and/or when you want an epi, etc.

  • Hmm.  You could switch doctors or tell yours you want to avoid a cesarean.  Most doctors/midwives are pretty receptive to what you want, especially if you voice your opinions early.  Some cesareans just can't be avoided.

    Congrats on the baby!
  • Definitely look into other doctors and midwives in your area if you're concerned. I would recommend doing it soon though, when I was looking for a midwife in my area it took 3 weeks from when I contacted them to hear back and another 2 weeks until my appointment.

  • Talk to your doctor about not having a c-section, voice your complaints and if your still not satisfied your doctor wouldn't do what is in the best interest of your baby and yourself for safety reasons then seek out another doctors office ands start from square one again.
  • Thank you ladies!! I'll take this into consideration!!!
  • I use a midwife, but deliver at the hospital so I have access to doctor's should there be an emergency
  • Interview other providers in your community. It's important to feel comfortable with who you are seeing and their approach. I loved seeing a midwife at a free standing birth center, b/c I knew the only way a c-section (and other interventions) would happen would if there were a medical reason to transfer to hospital care. I also loved that unlike past OBs I'd seen, my midwives met with me for an hour at each prenatal getting to know me and my whole life--I felt very safe and heard with them.
  • I can suggest my doctor. He's very quick but knowledgeable and easy going. Dr Hirsch WestMed Group in Ridge Hill, Yonkers
