Tummy Time

How are people doing tummy time?
Mats? Pillows? Toys?
How does your LO respond?

Re: Tummy Time

  • We do tummy time on an activity mat or on our chest. They both seem to enjoy it most of the time. It depends on their mood as to how long we do it, typically no less that 5 minutes, longer if they are chill!

  • We do it on an activity mat after her first awake morning diaper change. She doesn't mind it for a while. I always stop when she's ready and she sure let's me know when she's over it. Playing the music on the activity may mobile helps keep her calm longer during tummy time.

Lo hates being on his tummy. So we mainly do tummy time on my chest. I will probably buy him a play mat this week to see if that helps.
  • We do tummy time on her play may in the mornings. She seems more interested in trying to figure out how to roll over than lifting up her head. So, we work on her neck muscles when we are holding her upright.

  • She's not a huge fan. She will fuss for a few minutes then falls asleep. :)

  • We have only just started, but a blanket goes on the floor and I lie next to him and wave a toy in his face. He doesn't give two hoots about the toy. He will turn to the TV if its on, though. DS1 likes to get on the floor and invade the baby's breathing space, so we are working on it.
  • I found it on a blanket on the floor a few times a day for as long as he'll stand it. He usually just lays there and looks pathetic though. We're much more successful with neck workouts on my chest when I'm leaving back a bit.
  • We put her on a mat, on the bed, with DH and I on either side until she cries. Not sure we've ever made it to 15 minutes. We use mirrors and our voices to engage her. She usually lifts her head and switches sides a couple of times before getting frustrated that we're not picking her up.

  • We do it on a playmat. He seems to like it as long as he is in a good mood. We are getting between 5-15 minutes on the floor each day depending on his sleep. We also do it on our chests. He is lifting his head side to side and trying to push his hands and feet.

  • We do it on his play mat or our chest 2-3x a day. Our problem: we can't keep DS from rolling over onto his back. We've put him on his boppy, but I don't like it as much because of how squishy it is, but we don't know how else to keep him from rolling over. Suggestions?!?! He's not even 5 weeks yet and he's been doing this consistently for over 2. Very strange.

We do it on the playmat, he doesn't mind so much, and yesterday he actually fell asleep like that!

This is the same mat that we have and DS loves the mirror on it and reaches for it to make it swing. He also likes to kick at the crinkly leaf. He always lets us know when he's done by starting to fuss.

We also do a lot of tummy time on our chests which he seems to enjoy more... until he face plants on DHs collar bone. Then he comes back to mommy.

DD rolled over at 6 days. We just let her vs continually putting her back on her stomach which just pissed her off. I figured if she could roll over then she was probably strong enough.

We only keep doing it for as long as he will tolerate it which is usually about 7-8 times a sessions. I actually think he enjoys it. If he's fussy laying on his back, I'll put him on his stomach then he starts doing his thing and stops fussy for a while.

DD rolled over at four days...we just end tummy time when she rolls over.
  • Both of my kids have HATED having their arms swaddled so we never did it but that is a great point.

  • I do it once a day for about 10 minutes while I pump to build my stash. I prop DS up on the hoppy and he does ok. I will sometimes do it again if he is awake and I need to put him down. I often prop up a book of him to look at photos. We also baby wear most if the day

  • We try and do it a couple times a day until she has had enough, normally no longer than 5 minutes! We put her down on a blanket, haven't tried the mat yet, or we do it on my chest. She lifts her head very well while she is being burp, she has a very strong neck!
