With everyone slowly finding out the sex of their babies, and name decisions being made, it got me taking about my own name, and how I feel about it. Do you like your name?

Re: GTKY : Do you like your name?

  • As a kid I always told my mom I hated it because there were two Emily's in my class so I was always Emily A. Now that I'm older, I don't hate it and I have regretted for every saying it because I know how much I've agonized over baby names and I'm only 4 months! My poor mother was probably devastated.

  • SS: I go by a nickname and I love it. I'm not a huge fan of my full name, but it's not the worst, and I appreciate that I can use it for professional or formal situations if I want to.

  • I like that I rhyme with banana (so I guess there are two options). Never bothered me! If I didn't have my name it would probably be in my top 5 for girls.

I really like my name. It is the feminine version of a fairly common male name, and very french. It is mostly used for men, so when my husband and I introduce ourselves people often think my name is his name.

  • I like my name, it's very classic and can be used in a professional setting..but I do go by a nickname rather than my full first name. I've gone by it as long as I can remember.

meh not the best, but I'm used to it now!!
  • It would be my first choice for baby girl if it wasn't my name

  • I like my name fine, I just wish my parents would have spelled it differently. Oh well. Oh and then the notebook came out and every girl was like "Oh are you going to marry a guy named Noah"....

  • I hated my name as a kid because no one ever knew how to spell it, it wasn't on key chains, and because one famous singer had the same name everyone asked if I could sing. Yeah, I don't think the name endows you a perfect singing voice.
I do like my nickname though.
  • I'm Kate, short for Catherine. I love it. I never have to correct people and I like that it's a k or a c.
  • I like my name - I hardly ever ran into another girl with my name throughout school. When I started working - I worked with two others girls with the same name. I always said "what were the odds"

I also like my name because my older brother picked it out. My mom wanted to name me Ada Sue!! My mom said randomly my brother busted out with my first and middle name. Thank goodness he won that battle. I couldn't ever see myself being called Ada Sue.

  • I like my name a lot actually, it comes from my mother maiden name so it has meaning. I just hate how there's no shortened nickname for it , and if it is it's male. ... (My names Shawna. Mothers maiden name Shaw)
  • My name is OK now. I grew up in a graduating class of around 200 and there were at least 5 of us so it made things confusing. Also, my parents tried to spell my name differently so to this day people spell it incorrectly.
  • Meh, Jamie Lynn is so common it's ridiculous. Most people call me Miss Jamie Lynn, to put that hick twang on it. I have a serious southern accent apparently and they like to make fun of me, so I get a laugh out of it.

  • I absolutely hate my name! It's kyrstin pronounced like k-ear-stin. Not Kristin or Kirstin or the million of other names I am called. I've stopped correcting people.
  • I hated my name for so long because it wasn't cultural or ethnic. It also added to the stereotype of not being "Black" enough. I was raised by my Armenian mother and grandparents in a predominantly Caucasian neighborhood. I also don't think I look like a Kristie, whatever that means.

I eventually found out what the alternatives were and grew to like my name more.

    Mom: Roxanne
    Dad: Jacqueline

Today I am thankful that it is a name everyone can pronounce, even though they can't spell it, and it looks good on a resume.

  • Funny story - when I was 3-4, there was another girl in preschool with the same name. She was always getting yelled at, so I decided to go by my middle name so I wasn't constantly hearing my name yelled. I went by my middle name until mid elementary school, when I decided I actually like my first name better. Many of my friends from first and second grsde originally knew me by a different name.

I knew a guy named Darrell growing up who now goes by J.D. after his service in the Marines. He was a junior so he went by his middle name in school. To this day I cannot call him by anything other than Darrell, drives him insane.

  • Growing up, I was always jealous of other kids with more common names because...well, I could never find a cool rainbow pencil or bicycle license plate with MY name on it. My name is Norwegian, and it's very close to another Americanized name, so people always say my name/spell it incorrectly. That's really annoying, too... Now that I'm older, I like that my name was different. Still totally annoyed that people mix two of the letters around and never get my name right. ;-)

  • My name is ok. Easy to spell, which is good because my last name is rough. That is why my children will all have easy to spell names.

  • My mother made up my name. I have never heard anyone else with the same name which has been both good and bad.

No one ever pronounces it correctly the first few times and  in school when sub teachers were taking attendance and then would stop and just stare at the paper, I would just answer 'here'. I hated it!

Plus side: No one forgets that they have heard my name.  Funny Story: I went to college out far out of state, and got a call half way into my Fr. year from a girl who had gone to elem. school with me and I hadn't seen since 5th grade. She says "I figured you must be the girl from  x school because no one else has that name, how are you?"
  • Growing up in NJ not many Ashley's when we moved to Florida it was holy explosion of Ashley's they all either had my middle name or they were the opposite and had my middle name for their first and my first for their middle name. I was best friends with about 5-6 other Ashley's in high school. I don't hate my name so to speak it's just annoying that everyone has it.

  • Growing up I wasn't fond of it. And there are too many spellings. Now I hardly run into any Megan's or variations of it. (I like my spelling. No unnecessary letters.). But in school I was always "Megan B." Or the other girl would be "Meghan with an H." So I had a popular name of the 80s. So I'm bound and determined to not give my kid a top 10 name. Lol. Unless I just am completely in love with the name then they'll survive but for a girl the name we've got picked out isn't in the top 10 at the moment and we haven't got a boys picked. But honestly I can't imagine myself with any other name.

Mine is a biblical name. In general I'm ok with it. The worst is if people refer to me as one of the nick names. I prefer one but not the other.

Also there is no "k" there are 2 "c"s and dammit there are no "h"s!

  • Not a huge fan of my name is too unique and everyone mispronounces it. Also, it was not the name my mom intended, I have a crazy aunt who changed it (long story).  As a kid, I hated it, now I guess its ok. I go by a shortened version of it anyways.

  • Mine is an uncommon spelling of a very common 80s girl name.  I like that it's unique, and that it is a spin on my maternal gma's name.

I don't like that I will never, for as long as I live, find it on christmas ornaments/coffee mugs/keychains. :(

  • My name is okay but I'd rather have my middle name. My first name is Megan. In school everyone's name was Megan. In my one class in high school we had 4 Megan's in it. So eventually we all just went by last names.
  • my name is Ashley Christine and as a kid and teenager I never liked my first name because it was EVERYWHERE. I literally once had 5 Ashley's in a class with me. It was the most popular name the year I was born and in the top 5 the years surrounding when I was born. I would go through phases where I would insist on spelling my name with two e's or going by my middle name but it never stuck. Now that I'm older I like my name more. I never run into Ashley's and even if I did i don't really care anymore haha. DH always tells me my names the most beautiful name he's ever heard so that always makes me smile :)
  • I hated mine growing up, but mostly went by Robby anyways, so it wasn't *too* bad... Everyone still tries to spell it with an "i" though. I am not a man, nor am I a bird. It's Robyn with a "y"!

  • I am happy with my name, it is common enough that everyone knows how to spell it, but I didn't have anyone in my class with the same name until high school. DH actually has a cousin that I went to high school with who has the exact same name as me, and I keep hoping she will get married so we'll have different names.
  • I love my nickname Jackie but I hate my actual name Jaclyn. I hate that it's an alternate spelling and people always look at my nametag and say "Jass-lyn? Jocelyn?". I think the classic spelling Jacqueline is beautiful and at least people would know how to say it. Ithink that is why I am so vehemently anti-alternate spellings for my own baby's name.

Me-24~~ DH-25~~Married 6/15/2013~~Pregnant with our first due April 2, 2015~ Septate/ Bicornuate/Arcuate /some kind of not-normal uterus- won't know for sure which one till after babe is born~~Hoping for a full term baby!

I'm not sure what the most popular girls name is, but I bet mine is up there. But I had few classmates or colleagues with the same name since it's not a trendy name. It's also the same as my mom, and a couple of my cousins (I have a lot). When I was younger I went by a double barreled name (first, middle), but went by just the first starting in HS and ever since. I never liked or disliked it, it was just my name. I had a unique last name, so liked having a pretty simple first name.

  • I am okay with my name. My name wasn't common growing up in the 80's, but I started to see it more and more in the early-mid 90's. There is one variation of my name that I would've preferred (and one my parents were debating on), but it was never the end of the world to me! :)

  • I love it now - I was named after my grandfather, which I now think is awesomesauce. However, as a child, growing up with a "boys" name (even spelled in a feminine way) sucked. I hated it back then.

  • I voted SS.  I would like my name if my parents had spelled it properly.  My name is Thea, but it's pronounced "Tee-ah".  So really, the much more common spelling is Tia.  I hate having to correct people all the time.  My middle name is Victoria (my Mom's name), which I love.  If we ever have a girl that will be her middle name.
