Cervical length and pre term labor?

hi all

I posted about a month ago about being sent to the hospital with threatened pre term labor and they gave me the steroid shots and pills to stop contractions. Well it worked but as of the last few days I've been having more contractions and I went to my normal doctor appointment today and she Checked me and said i wasn't dialated but my cervix was very soft and short measuring at 1cm so she sent me to the hospital to be monitored which all turned out ok. But my question is does anyone know what a normal cervix length is and roughly how long it would take to go from having a 1cm cervix into labor?? I'm 32 weeks Tommorow and her words to me were "let's try and make it to 34 week" WHAT!?! that scared me a bit.

Has anyone had experince with this and known how long it has taken to go from this point into labor??

  • I have no experience with that, but good luck.  I know you can be dilated under 3 for awhile.  I remember being at 3cm w/ DD at my 36 week and she was induced  after her EDD.  Hopefully the meds work for you and that baby will grow nice and healthy!

  • I don't know this answer but at my ultrasound last week(I was 28 weeks) mine was 4cm. Give your doctors office a call and let them know you have some follow up questions now that you've had a chance to process your last appointment more. Your doctor really is the best person to reach out to.

  • I agree your doctor is the best expert. Every person is different, with DS my cervix was 1cm and under (also very soft and funnel) for over a month. I'm sure there are plenty of stories with longer time frames. I assume they put you on bed rest and pelvic rest, it helps. Hang in there and Good Luck!

I don't know what the normal cervical length in pregnancy for 31 weeks is, I assume the same or close to mine.. I had mine checked via u/s and he said 32-36 weeks it should be 3.0-3.5.  Mine is around yours (1.3). I'm dilated 2cm and 75% effaced. There's no solid answer as to how long it takes. You can have a much shorter cervix and go full term. It really just depends on what your body is going to do.  We are also shooting for a short term goal of 34 weeks- but I'm contracting a lot off and on and they won't stop my labor past that point (I also get taken off the meds that are being used to help stop the contractions @ 34 weeks, too).

Your doctor won't even know the answers :) It totally just depends on too many factors.  You could end up going full term, you could end up going sooner.  (did they happen to do a fFn test on you?)

  • You can go into labor at any time, regardless of cervical length. It can change in a matter of hours. Best to take your doctor's advice, whatever that is. Good luck!

  • My cervical length 2 weeks ago was 1.5cm, I was 50% effaced and dilated to 2cm.  My chances of carrying to term are <25%.  My goal for now is 34W, and each week after that I will see as a blessing.  I was told that right now the cervical length should be >3.5cm but the shape of the cervix plays into that as well, for example, I am funneling, which I was told is a sign that I may not carry as long as someone with a 1.5cm cervix without funneling.
